It may also have to do with disruption to the microbiome from a variety of chemical assaults and overuse of antibiotics.
There's a multitude of effects, largely socio-political and socio-economical. Here in the U.S. we have a higher number of millennials coming into depression. However if you look at Asian countries with a high suicide rate, the impacts are even higher with depression contingent on economical success.

Depression is not just an American problem but it's also something that is impacting cultures from around the world.... and Asia even more. When self-contentment is not easily reached, it does appear that depression kicks in to a greater extent.

Certainly, all possible causes should be reviewed and considered because this is something that has to be addressed from every angle. Especially since it's a growing problem within our culture.
