Throughout the pages of time, there have always been men and women who walked down the path of emotional depression. In such cases, the depression may have developed with no known cause, while other cases might have been in direct consequence of something dire that happened in their lives. Either way, emotional depression is definitely something that is not new to our world and and few would even dispute that fact.

Having said that, we must also point out that depression is not only an ongoing problem within our modern society, but additionally, it is a condition which is swiftly rising in terms of its level of impact and far spreading reach. This unfortunate fact is very troubling because we are witnessing its consequences in ways that we never could have imagined. Suicide seems to be more common and it's now affecting not just the old, but young alike. We have to do something about this because it is turning into a disastrous situation that is affecting families everywhere!
As our society becomes more focused on body image, social media status and peer approval and acceptance, feelings of depression and inadequacy will likely become more prevalent among struggling individuals.

Therapists, doctors and trained professionals try their best to prescribe medications and offer therapy and some have had success in this fight to overcome depression. Be that as it may, I am convinced that more has to be done and we as everyday citizens should grow in awareness and realize that emotional depression is serious.......So serious, in fact, that it should be dealt with urgently, but in a loving, caring and helpful way.

If you see the warning signs of depression within your own life or the life of a friend or loved-one, then take the first step and address it. Don't stick your head in the sand and pretend it's not there because that will only make matters worse. Be proactive and don't be afraid to talk about it because you might just save your own life or the life of someone you know and love.

It may also have to do with disruption to the microbiome from a variety of chemical assaults and overuse of antibiotics.

There's a multitude of effects, largely socio-political and socio-economical. Here in the U.S. we have a higher number of millennials coming into depression. However if you look at Asian countries with a high suicide rate, the impacts are even higher with depression contingent on economical success.

Excellent point you've made there, @semantralist .
Depression is not just an American problem but it's also something that is impacting cultures from around the world.... and Asia even more. When self-contentment is not easily reached, it does appear that depression kicks in to a greater extent.

Certainly, all possible causes should be reviewed and considered because this is something that has to be addressed from every angle. Especially since it's a growing problem within our culture.

It seems as though depression is a symptom of the current model of western society. A lot of it has to do with:

  1. The lack of human connection between individuals. The foundation of communities and strong familial bonds seem to be lessening in frequency.

  2. Chemical imbalances within individuals which has a strong link toward the foods we as a society are eating. A lack of key nutrients to support a healthy body and mind can drastically effect the wellness of a person.

I agree with both of your points and especially the one about the lack of human connection. I think that plays a big part in this whole problem with depression.

Yes, it is informative. Depression can ruin one's life. It must be handled as early as possible.

I'll read this after my nap...too depressing to think about right now.

It is a sobering topic, that's for sure.
