Make your turn

in #life7 years ago

A lot of my life I have spent waiting for various things to happen or various opportunities to come my way. I remember once at a school camp when the class was told 'to wait your turn' to get allocated a cup of hot chocolate. Kids rushed to line up and be first and then boisterously pushed each other to gain a position in the queue. I was near the back waiting patiently with the few children who didn't push or use their elbows to gain advantage. Our time came to be served but it was too late, the teacher with an apologetic look informed us that there wasn't enough to go around.

I remember it well. Without fail, the three of us said 'It's ok'.

Looking back, I think I have spent a lot of time thinking 'It is ok' or 'I didn't really want it anyway' but, it was not true, I did want it. I was dishonest with myself, I excused myself, I sold myself short. Why is it so? Why would I patiently wait for someone to provide for me? Why am I so unwilling to push my way into the line? I still don't push into a line to wait to be served.

We are told to wait our turn but instead, I am learning to 'Make my turn' instead. Think early, learn early, act early so that when opportunities do present themselves, I am prepared to Seize the day. I struggle with this daily as it doesn't seem to be in my nature. One doesn't need to use elbows, one need not compete or push others out of the way when prepared, as one is already enjoying the metaphorical hot chocolate they made themselves.

This is just a little story that came to mind this morning. My wife is off to write an exam in another city and I have taken the day from work to spend it with our daughter. She is just waking up now and I will go and get her from bed and hold her little warm body for a while, perhaps read a book before breakfast.

After that, I will encourage her to find something to do, something to play with, to make up a game. If she needs me to help her, she will come and ask. Instead of patiently waiting, I will encourage her to patiently learn to provide for herself. Hopefully in time, she will make her turn. At the moment, she is playing and talking with her soft toys in her bed, she hasn't needed me yet.

Patience doesn't mean waiting your turn, to me it means working until an opportunity presents itself.

Competition is good, as long as it isn't unfair towards the other competitors.

You didn't do anything wrong, in fact you were better than all those kids who were propelled by greed and selfishness, who coludn't care less for anyone else.

Hats off to you.

Being the better person is more important than being a selfish little person who thinks that their success at the expense and damages to others is worth something. People like that die all alone and never have the respect of others. The people around them are brown noses or even worse just like them and would gladly do unto them what they have done to others.

So I say a big YES to being more competitive, and a bigger YES to being a better person the entire way through your life on this earth.

Don't let the petty little greedy selfish people influence any part of your thoughts, they just are not worth the time of day.

As you concluded:

"Patience doesn't mean waiting your turn, to me it means working until an opportunity presents itself."

Excellent read dude. Thanks for the post.

i hate queue from my childhood . I understand your point:))

Life has a funny way of working, I'm a believer that working towards realistic goals, having deadlines for those goals and just having a positive attitude at everything you do, life will find a way to reward you and you will find something that you love and can live off it.

Small steps lead everywhere.

excellent thinking comes to you in the morning to mind, I totally agree, I have to work for myself, and work on myself, improve my qualities and fight laziness ... thanks for a quality article, a good day

Good points, when preparation meets opportunity, don't waste time.

Patience doesn't mean waiting your turn, to me it means working until an opportunity presents itself.

Well said! It's also doing things now to put yourself in a better position later. The little things like picking up some trash off the counter as you're walking by, then later you see some crumbs on the counter so you wash it off with a rag, now when you walk by next, the counter is clean and you didn't have to spend hours sorting through the piles of garbage and various food products that have spilled onto the counter over the last week. Small progress made on a daily basis.

Great post 👍

I actually just spent some time doing this as playing with our daughter. It does make the place feel better but the biggest hope is that she will learn to do it sooner rather than later ;)

I can't wait for the part when my son and I watch football together and he brings me a fresh beer ☺ #lifegoals lol

"Daddy's soda"

Working patiently till an opportunity presents itself is the right thing to do, not lazing around I the name of patience people tend to miss that point. Nice post tarazkp

I can relate a lot to being that kid that didn't cheat and because of it got cheated. I think those of us that sometimes act too timid for our own good are trying to not let out a dark side within us, at least it feels this way to me.

I agree. It is some kind of repression which doesn't help anything.

I think I am doing the same with the thinking..

I think I have spent a lot of time thinking 'It is ok' or 'I didn't really want it anyway' but, it was not true, I did want it.
sometimes, I don't even know what I want though..

Finding what one wants is a big part of life. Most proxy it to the group though.

Wow.... Ur posts are always amazing!!!
Wonderful... Some people are just bullied, even in things they are meant to have.
Thank u for telling me I shouldn't just sit around but instead make an opportunity that "only" me can have
