Travel with Tara : Have you ever experienced Sleep Paralysis ?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

This is first time I'm sharing something so personal to me onSocial Media.
Of course my, friends and family know about it, but no one else. Let me dive right into it.
The recent episode of Sleep Paralysis I encountered was on 5th Wednesday, 2017.

First let me explain what sleep paralysis actually is.

Sleep Paralysis is a phenomenon where you are asleep but fully aware of your surroundings, but are unable to move or make any physical movements. Simply put, you are stuck in a dream and can't snap out of it because your brain is not sending any signals to your body to wake up or to move even a single muscle.

Does that sound scary?
It is! I have had sleep paralysis maybe like 3 to 4 times. Every time I was fully aware of my environment. In my dream I was in the exact place where I have fallen asleep! It's the same every time for me. Everything seems to be so normal at first and then you start noticing something is a little off.

I was stuck in a loop and every move I made in the dream would repeat again in a few seconds. I was trying so hard to wake up, I would scream in my dream, I would cry even, but it never helped. The only thing that saved me every time were my friends! I would either hear my roommate's voice was or get a drunken call from my best friend at 5 o'clock in the morning! Which is a miracle by the way. Every time I woke up I would be just shaking because of the fear.

The demon in the picture is like "Hey there gorgeous!".
There's a myth saying that it's caused by demons which I think is total nonsense.
I have read about this condition. The are several reasons why this could happen. It could be anxiety, excessive stress, sleep deprivation, narcolepsy, depression etc. My problem could be just sleep deprivation and anxiety. I guess it's common among young adults? I'm 23 years old and I'm still figuring things out in life. I don't know how to adult, not yet anyway. I guess many can relate to that.

If you have read this far, thank you so much for reading! You are awesome! I have probably received more support on Steemit than anywhere else (other than my family and friends). I love you all!

It has happened to me a few times and it was awful!
A less stressful life would probably help :)
thanks for your post

Working on a less stressful life :) Thank you for stopping by <3 I appreciate it :)

oh my goodness, this is so frightening, I remember the first time I experienced this it was the most terrifying experience I had ever had in my life. I instantly thought that I was haunted and cried whilst loooking on the internet for what actually happened.

In Chinese we call it 鬼压床 which literally means Ghost on bed. That is the exact feeling I had and I hope to never experience again, even though I know it's not a ghost!

Thank you for the lovely article Tara (my pick of the day!) x

Thank you so much @sweetsssj <3
It is so horrifying! When I share these things with people, they just think it's a nightmare.
I guess when this happens, the goal is to stay calm.

Thank you so much again for your wonderful comment! :)

I just experienced last night again and it is just horrible.

It happens when I just slept 2 hours the night before fe, so when I am overtired and I am about to fall asleep.

How long do you think you were in this state?

I think for me it is just a couple of seconds to a minute or so, then there goes a huge twitch through my body and I get control back and wake up. Yesterday I could even call myself a bit down "you know this, keep calm"

I was practising to be able to have lucid dreams but stopped that a while ago but I have read this can help.

Woah. Alright. I keep saying the same thing, that 'you have experienced this. Calm the f down'. I need an external source to snap me out of it I guess. I guess I was in it for an hour. It felt that long!
Thank you for stopping by <3

@taraamin77,
Very interesting topic and I also have those experienced before. I don't know the scientific explanation about this situation. But when I got this experience it feels HORRIBLE :D

Thanks for sharing this post!

Cheers~

I know it's awful! thank you :)

@taraamin77,
You are welcome friend!

wonderful post, really enjoyed it !

nice travel @taraamin77 i like you post

This post is not about travel.

I don't have that experience anymore... though now I kind of miss it.

Whaaaaaat :P I don't ever want it. :(

I guess I'm more curious with the feeling and want to explore it more, now that I've read up on some theories on it. Some say the feeling of sleep paralysis is when you are about to have an out-of-body experience!

That sounds so cool and scary at the same time :P

I have experienced it a few times, and at first instance it is alarming. However relaxing into it helps. Your brain and body eventually sync up again.
What does however happen to me almost nightly is a hypnagogic reflex. That is again where the body and brain fall slightly out of sync, except when you are starting to fall asleep. You may already be drifting into a dream state, but the mind still hasn't shut down it's motor controls yet, and you might all of a sudden find yourself jerking awake.
The upside is, you can take advantage of this to slip into lucid dreaming. =)

Oh that happens to me every time I fall asleep. I would scare the hell out of a person :P

It feels quite violent sometimes doesn't it.

Sometimes. yeah :(

Hmm i have a lot of friends that experience the same thing! I have not experienced it yet! I think fear is always your enemy, but i was thinking maybe if you are aware that your dreaming, maybe you could create a super hero or power, but thats unlikely, but thats strange and scary indeed.

I need to train my brain for that :P

Have you tried meditation @taraamin77, try practicing that for a while, as sometimes i feel like im in between dreaming but im awake at the same time, and i learned that when fear arises in my thoughts, i focus back on my breathing

I'll try that :)

You should smoke some nice bud! :)

Thanks for the suggestion :P

Anytime. :)
