“I hate glamorizing over-working. It’s not healthy."

The sense of work being equivalent to purpose seems almost to follow lines of socioeconomic class - I think it is a cultural holdover from the feudalistic values of our forebears. There is a hardworking segment of society at the bottom of the ladder, building the houses and pouring the drinks, who are brought up to believe work is the only nourishment they should need, and the only ingredient in their success. Meanwhile on the upper floors we hear people talk about "work life balance" and "sabbaticals" and "mental health days", and we've scoffed at that like it's an indulgence of the soft and rich, not letting ourselves think of free time as a need, because it just hasn't been an option.

“I hate glamorizing over-working. It’s not healthy. The fact that there are so many people going without sleep, food, personal hygiene (not to mention time for relaxation, personal time and socialization, which are very necessary for mental health) just to stay afloat is not something to be celebrated or applauded. It’s a problem, not a goal that all good employees should aspire to, or a norm everyone should be expected to perform.” -appalachiananarchist

I just don't get the craze for profits in this society. It's like everyone is telling each other to achieve more, to make more money, to compete and earn victory over some unexplained cause.. Why the thirst for profits if no one is happy? Can't people see more and more are breaking down?

And yet, when it becomes normative...
Employers make employees compete. For jobs. For stats. For money brought in. And frankly, employees aren't playing on a level field. Some got kids. Some got disabilities. Some got family affairs or legal appointments.
And they still deserve to eat.
