Weight gain is a growing problem, and many people are suffering obesity with unknown causations. Our first response to weight gain is usually dieting and exercising in an attempt to lose some extra pounds. For many people, this approach usually fails because the real, hidden causes of their gain are something else.

There are several surprising reasons for gaining weight that you probably didn’t know before. There is a lot that our body continuously does in the background to metabolize the foods that we eat and maintain a healthy weight. Many things can disturb this process, such as an imbalance of hormones and deficiency of micronutrients that are essential to regulate some body functions which regulates our weight. Some factors of gaining weight are out of our reach and there is little we can do about it. However, before doing anything, it’s important to understand and discover the actual reasons for gaining weight.

Here are some surprising reasons due to which you might be gaining weight :

  • Deficiency of Micronutrients
    While we may think that we’re eating a lot and that’s causing us weight gain, the reality could be entirely opposite. Weight gain can also occur due to deficiency of some nutrients when they are lacking from our diet. Micronutrients are important to maintain health, proper weight, and energy. The symptoms could include low vitality, lethargy and lack of energy, and by cutting down on our food, in this case, would only make the situation worse without helping us lose any weight. Some essential micronutrients that you need are iron, magnesium, and vitamins, such as vitamin D. By eating the foods that are rich in these nutrients, such as green vegetables and iron-rich foods, we can cope up with this problem naturally.
  • Pain
    This may sound surprising to most people. How could pain possibly make me fat? Research shows that there are links of weight gain to certain painful conditions, such as osteoarthritis and plantar fasciitis. These pains can usually occur in heal, hip and knee area. In these conditions, the patient’s physical activities are greatly reduced which could cause significant weight gain.
  • Depression
    Have you found someone saying, “I’m getting fat because I’m depressed.”? Well, you might someday. Depression can cause weight gain due to a number of reasons. Most important being the side effects of your antidepressant. For this, it is recommended to shift to natural antidepressants such as foods that help reduce depression. Another secondary reason for weight gain due to depression is the lack of activity in depressed people. They would usually keep themselves isolated in a room or spend most of their time in bed, which would cause weight gain.
  • Weak Digestion
    One reason you’re gaining weight could be a weak digestive system. If you have one you’d probably know about it already. It could be characterized by slow bowel movements, difficulty in excretion and sensitivity to various foods. It could be alleviated by eating foods rich in fiber, taking proper medicines, exercising and keeping ourselves hydrated.
  • Cushing’s
    A health condition called Cushing’s syndrome can cause the cortisol levels to increase in our blood. It’s caused due to a tumor in the adrenal gland, which could result in several negative health impacts. If you experience symptoms like hypertension, altered skin, colored stretch marks on the waist region, and osteoporosis along with weight gain, it’s strongly recommended to see a doctor regarding this condition as your weight gain could just be due to Cushing’s Syndrome.
  • Old Age
    With growing age, our metabolism slows down and our body isn’t capable of burning as many calories as it used to do. Therefore, many foodies become vulnerable to obesity in the latter part of their lives. In this situation, exercising should be your favorite activity.
  • Medication
    You might be regularly taking medication you are sensitive to, or the ones that probably have side effects including weight gain. If your concern about your weight is growing, see if those medications are necessary, and talk to your doctor about possible alternatives.

I just spotted about 4 reasons why im gaining weight. Never knew this
Especially pain and depression.

thank you so much i think another reason for weight gain would also be child bearing because mostly when a mother gets pregnant there is the baby weight that comes along so incase the mother after delivering doesn't work hard to shade off the excess weight sometimes it stays. so after child birth mothers need to work out to shade of the excess baby weight. thank you so much.
