India to China Road built during 2nd World War

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I was curious to know how India looked under British Governance. After watching a couple of interesting videos, I stumbled upon a this small documentary showing how Ledo road was constructed during 2nd world war. The Ledo Road (aka Stilwell road) was intended to be the primary route to supply goods to China from India, mainly to help the Allies during wartime. Previously, the only option was to airlift the supply from a Himalayan region called "the hump". The work for Ledo road started in 1942 and on 4th February 1945, and the first convoy of 113 vehicles reached Kunming, China after traveling for 22 days. Now this road was so extreme and treacherous that while flying over the Hukawng Valley during the monsoon, Mountbatten asked his staff about the river below them. An American officer replied, "That's not a river, it's the Ledo Road."
