The impact of technology on society | Chapter IV - Our dependence on technologysteemCreated with Sketch.

What if technology disappeared overnight? What if we could never use the Internet, computers, Smartphones, or anything else? I often debate myself on the subject and I confess that this question has been brought up more and more in the past weeks. Lately I've been looking for work, and I ended up doing an introspection that led me to conclude that most of my professional competences (if not all) are closely linked to this area, which makes me a bit insecure.

What is fact is that technology is evolving exponentially, so we do not need to worry about its hypothetical disappearance, right? After all, technology is here to stay, right? Well, there is a probability that the technology will disappear, but that would be tiny. However, these issues arise because we are intimately dependent on technology, and the fear of being left without access to it haunts us. But the most interesting thing is that we take their presence for granted in our lives, almost as if it were a member of our body.

Have you ever imagined that you were two weeks without access to technology? Just thinking about this already costs, or is it only when we feel the absence of these tools that we miss? I think technology is already so ingrained in us that we do not realize that our ancestors had to go horseback to deliver a letter. Well, we don’t need to go that far: mail correspondence, before the internet, already took some time, so nothing was instantaneous like it is now. Just thinking about the route that a letter would take to get from Portugal to Brazil can make you bored, let alone waiting for the answer. But that was the reality back then.

Humanity has not always had all these benefits that technology has brought us, so we can see where this passion for the technological world comes from. After all, technology was created to improve and facilitate our lives, but that doesn’t mean that we should be completely dependent to this digital world. I think this has a lot to do with how we look at technology, and it's a fact that certain aspects of it are addictive, but they're there because we're probably missing something in the real world.

Our "analog world" is full of adventure and new things to learn, and we can do it hand in hand with technology, but we need to create a balance and respect technology as the tool that is while being aware of the advantages and consequences that its use may bring.

Thank you for reading so far!

This publication is somewhat special to me because it turns out to be, in a way, a self-criticism. While my field of expertise is very technology-oriented, it's always good to be aware that there is more to explore and learn in this world than technology.

I hope you have enjoyed this post and that could be useful to you in the future.

What about you? Do you feel dependent on technology? How?

I agree. Thanks for answering in such a short time window. ;)

Nice original post. It's important to record and remember the times past when technology wasn't with us. How did some of us pass college degrees without google? Must fast becoming a diminishing number of people, such that even education has adapted to cope. Without technology, would we still cope? Probably, but it would be quite chaotic for a while ...

Indeed, that's a nice question to raise! We may not see it but technology helped us a lot in the way we learn and absorb information. Nowadays we don't need to go to the library to get books specifically to confirm something, we can do it instantly. So yeah, I think that taking away technology as a whole would be chaotic at first, like you said, but we always tend to adapt.

Thank you very much for your comment and support!

I remember a world without technology and we got along just fine...in the event of an EMP type event, I think half of society would lose their minds.

It's probably true that people would freak out at the beggining if an EMP event would happen, but eventually we would adapt I guess. Even so, I think that an event like that would be very impactful on society, regarding people's behaviour and the way society would evolve.

Thank you very much for your comment and support!

This is magnificent! @shaden
