What Aquaponics made me leave the wine bottle and got me talking about - the organic way to grow food

in #life8 years ago

Well it's Saturday night on my watch and I decided to take a small break from wine.

Don't worry! It doesn't mean this post isn't going to be helpful or useful; It just means that as we are all here to care about the world, I want to share with you the magic that is Aquaponics!

(I take it you are reading this post while enjoying a glass of wine, just like me, huh?)

So everyone has heard of hydroponics, but for those who haven't, it is a method of growing plants without soil, using minerals.

Which is nice, but it doesn't fulfill the task of having a full ecological circle! Hence there is an improvement in place.

And my dream is one day, to open an aquaponics farm, about which I am going to talk about in my future posts.

So what is aquaponics and why it made me leave the wine bottle behind and got me sharing it with you? Well, it’s a very simple ecological food circle, which is just amazing.

First let's look at how plants grow? The following pictures tell us all we need to know about it!

That is just great! But what do we do in today's world? Where not all soil is applicable and we can't grow food all year around due to the weather conditions outside!

Now you might say : "come on, here he goes once again with his questions... it’s obvious, just use a greenhouse"

Well, you are right! But it really isn't that’s simple, due to all the difficulties that arise with soil, minerals, watering and so on.

Aquaponics solves all this in one go! It uses the food chain circle to grow the plants!

How? Well, by connecting your hydroponics plant system to a pond with... fish!

Imagine that you have a pond of lovely Trout. You feed the fish and they produce waste, this waste in turn is fed (along with the water) to your plants. The plants are planted without soil, using hydroponics methods and as they intake the water, the gravel filters the water (leaving all the minerals that are in the waste), and returns it fresh to the fish!

To help you to understand it:

And voilà, we get some organic fish, and organic plants.

What more, is that it grows more plants then a usual greenhouse, works all year around AND does it faster. MOST IMPORTANTLY - ZERO chemicals!

There is a lot of video available that you can watch and a lot of websites where you can buy pre ready kits, but I like this under 10$ DIY system video:

As I mentioned in the beginning, my dream is to build a small farm, using the aquaponics system and other growing systems combined. This I will outline in detail in my further articles.

I hope one day to achieve that dream, and maybe... just maybe, steemit can help me!

great post, i'm glad to see more people being introduced to aquaponics. I expect that as time goes on, it will become a more and more common way to produce food. There are already a couple of major agricultural operations using aquaponics. The largest is a huge lettuce producer, iirc.

I share your dream of my own aquaponics farm :) I had a small set up before my last move that I was using to grow tomatoes and herbs on my balcony. I did it myself with an old fish tank and a small pump sending water into a big wide garden pot i positioned above it. It did great :) I'm looking forward to setting up a new one soon.

Thee is quite a few big companies in Holland if I am not mistaken.

Drop me a pm in chat, to show some pics if you have any, if not I would be glad to discuss it anyways )

i learn so much everyday on steemit. totally spending too much time. but this post was gold for me !

Wow, thanks for the compliment!

For those into growing medical marijuana, aquaponics provides some excellent opportunities to grow productively as well as raise some fish!

Glad you liked the post

great content man! new stuff to me as well!

Enjoy, and thanks!

What a wonderful post! I'm so happy this kind of content is making it's way to Steemit - I can't wait to read more posts that you make!

Thanks! I like your posts too, decided to follow you )

This was on my to do list, I was going to start with a 275 gallon tote. I think I'll try this first. THANK YOU @serejandmyself !!!!

Wow, can you plese keep me updated! I iwll try to find you in the chat to continue the conversation!

This is a nice post on the technique, do you have any pics of your own setup?

No (((
Like i said i have a dream, and hopefully steem can help me to achieve this dream. To build a small farm needs funds, and not small

Aquaponics is one of the best ways to be self-sufficient. Nice post.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Aquaponics is awesome! Want to build a rig

My dream is to have a farm!

Wow! Interesting cycle, learned something new today, thanks!

You welcome! I think everyone has to try this out!
