in #life7 years ago

In honour of Canada's 150th birthday, I am documenting 150 reasons why Canada rocks on the blockchain. Each day leading up to July 1, I will choose a topic and give you the top 15 reasons I think Canada is awesome in that area.

You can check out the first parts of this series here:

The next topic is geography.

15 Canada's Geography Rocks

  1. Canada is the world's second largest country by area, encompassing 3,855,085 square miles (9,984,670 sq km).

  2. The country has a population of about 33.5 million -- 90 per cent of which lives within 100 miles of the U.S. border. This is about three people per square kilometre, making Canada the fourth least densely populated country in the world.

  3. Canada is bordered by the United States to the south (and on it's northwest corner where Alaska is located), the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Arctic Ocean to the north. The country has the world's longest coastline, which is about 202,000 or 265,000 kilometres long, depending on the source and measurement method used. By comparison, Indonesia has the second longest coastline at 54,000 km (or 95,000 km depending on source and measurement method).

  4. Canada has about 20 per cent of the world's fresh water, and seven per cent of the world's renewable fresh water.

  5. Canada has more than two million lakes, which together cover seven per cent of the countries land mass. Among these are 14 of the 36 largest lakes in the world, including Lake Superior (#2), Lake Huron (#4), Great Bear Lake (#8) and Great Slave Lake (#10).

  6. Canada's climate is incredibly diverse, from permafrost in the north, to B.C.'s temperate weather, to the more extreme fluctuations of the Prairies and Atlantic Canada. The highest temperature recorded is 45 degrees Celsius (113 F) in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan in 1937. The lowest temperature ever recorded is -67 degrees Celsius (-81.4 F) in Snag, Yukon in 1947. This is as cold as the surface temperature on Mars!

  7. Saskatchewan, Canada is home to the world's best sunsets. Check out @daveks's photos for proof.

  8. Manitoulin Island, located in Lake Huron, is the largest freshwater island on the planet. It is also home to 108 freshwater lakes.

  9. Alert, Nunavut is the world's northernmost settlement. It is located at the tip of Ellesmere Island in Northern Canada, just 815 kilometres south of the North Pole.

  10. Canada is home to 30 per cent of the world's boreal forest, and 10 per cent of the world's total forests. Canadian forests cover about 397 million hectares of land -- most of which is publicly owned.

  11. Canada has 49 species of amphibians, 35 species of reptiles, 195 species of mammals and more than 400 species of non-migratory birds. The largest land mammal in

  12. Stretching 7,604 kilometres (4,725 miles) across the country, the Trans Canada highway is the longest national highway in the world.

  13. Canada is home to the northern portion of the Rocky Mountains, which is the third longest mountain range in the world. The mountain range runs from the top of British Columbia southward along the B.C.-Alberta border, and all the way down to New Mexico.

  14. Canada has a wide variety of ecoregions -- broadleaf forests, Arctic plains, rainforests, badlands, tundra plains and prairie. It's no surprise that the country is home to an equally diverse collection of flora, including 4,100 species of native vascular plants.

  15. In 2001, geologists discovered an area of exposed bedrock along the Hudson Bay in northern Quebec, where the rocks dated 250 million years older than any other known rocks on Earth.
