The Classical Vintage Portobello Market /

in #life7 years ago

Portobello Road is home to one of the most famous street markets in the UK. A name synonymous culturally with old vintage England and many a deal to be haggled there. It’s hard to believe looking at it now that it once used to be no more than an old country path known as Green Lane, many years ago of course. It lies between the equally well-known Notting Hill and Kensal Green (which is where I’ve lived for quite a few years now).

Fast forward over 300 years later and it has become a sprawling utopia of diversity. Many segmented communities make up much of its inhabitants now as well as the a plethora of various restaurants and pubs to choose from. With market stall traders initially only selling food and other simple household items, it is now become more of an “antique’s” haven.

Today, Portobello Market has gained a massive degree of popularity and is considered a chic and trendy place to visit and reside in, drawing crowds from all over the world. The fashion industry managed to take advantage of this incredible business opportunity and now is home is many of the top designer labels and brands. From it’s previously run-down and shoddy trading conditions to blossoming into an affluent place of commerce and desirability, Portobello Road is indeed one of a kind and I consider myself very lucky to be so close to this historic piece of English heritage.

Many weekends were spent there with my friends. Either socialising in some of those great establishments or browsing through the main street itself, checking out all the different wares and merchandise is always so much fun and very informative. The market is open on Saturday and Sunday throughout the year so it provides the perfect venue when wanting to spend a lovely afternoon. This is also famous because it is the location for the movie “Notting Hill” starring Julie Roberts and Hugh Grant.

You can easily take the tube to Ladbroke Grove or Notting Hill Gate station, either of which will be fine. Though I would recommend walking from Ladbroke Grove Station, which is less than five minutes away to the entrance of the market. Also, if you keep going straight along the road, you will end up in the awesome Notting Hill Gate.

There is so much to explore in the market as well as the shops either side. You can guarantee there will be a certain attraction there for everyone. Hope you get a chance to visit the great place and relish the amazing Portobello Market!!

Enjoy!!!

Thank you @schamangerbert for the nice comment. I hope you have a chance to check the place out :)

Very interesting ... it's always nice to visit the city markets!

I could not agree more!! I am quite lucky to live in London where there are lots of places to explore :)

thanks for sharing this, I have heard of this market but never been, so it was interesting to me.

I was shocked at the price of the Rustic Cherry and Almond Tart lol that was a wow to see...expensive

Yeah being in such a commercial place, things could be a little pricey but not all. For example, the fresh fruits are cheaper than even in the supermarket :)

@rea, thank you for taking me there ... I love that movie Notting Hill.

I love the pics and hungry again I suddenly want to go to Kranenburg for the fries. I want the kitchen utensils - handy! Amazing :) Did you get some?

And those handicrafts are awesome. The food pics are making me hungry again :)

No, I didn't get the kitchen utensils but I was tempted though, lol...
Yes those street food are so delicious, I wanna go back there again this weekend, haha!

@rea - I would have haha
impulsive - my Id is always working 't seems - just read @thecryptofiend's post :)

So many good food. so little time. Looks like one big market.

Very well put, @ace108! It really is a one-stop shop if you are feeling hungry or looking for great deals on fashion and accessories. :)

Yum! When I read the title, I half-expected seeing mushrooms, but was surprised at all the other delectable treats. My eyes thank you for it, but my stomach does not.

Lol, well, there's your incentive to come visit London and enjoy this wonderful place! Thank you for taking the time to comment. :)

Thanks, @helene. It's a diverse and interesting place. A must-see when over in these parts. :)
