Bernadetta was born on January 7, 1844 in Lourdes, France. She was the daughter of a poor miller, and the eldest sister of nine siblings.
When she was 11 years old, a relative took her in, Bernadetta dealt with grazing sheep. After three years, she returned to her native Lourdes to prepare for the First Holy Communion.
On February 11, 1858, for the first time Our Lady appeared to Bernadeta.
The revelation took place near the Gave River, in the Grotto of Massabielle.

Our Lady called her to the rosary prayer and to penance for the conversion of sinners. Within six months, Our Lady appeared to Bernadette 18 times. These visions gave rise to the famous Lourdes sanctuary.
In the same year Bernadetta fell into bilateral pneumonia. She recovered, but decided to enter the convent.
After pneumonia she became ill with asthma. Bernadetta lived in hiding, Struggling with the disease. Although her name was known all over the world, she did not give any interviews, thinking that her mission was over. At that time, thousands of pilgrims were coming to Lourdes every day.
She died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35.
