Are You Sure You Want To Say That? Overcoming Your Big Mouth

in #life7 years ago

The mouth, your mouth, your spouses mouth, your kid’s mouth, your friends mouth, your enemies mouth; what do they all have in common? They can build someone up or tear someone down, they lead people on the right path or the wrong one, they can confess love or hate, they are more powerful than swords, and for most people they are completely and totally out of control.  The mouth is the one part of the body which tends to get everyone in more trouble than they ever wished.  How do we control it? How do we improve it and allow it to improve others?  What do the Scriptures say about your mouth?First lets take a look at what we are not supposed to do with our mouth.

  • You must not steal. You must not act deceptively or lie to one another. – Leviticus 19:11
  • Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogant words come out of your mouth, for Yahuah is an Elohim of knowledge, and actions are weighed by Him.- 1 Samuel 2:3
  • Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don’t let your lips talk deviously.- Proverbs 4:24
  • With his mouth the ungodly destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous are rescued.  – Proverbs 11:9

Those are just a few verses telling us not to lie, boast arrogantly, speak gossip, or destroy others with our mouth.  The Scriptures contain many more verses about words, speaking, and the mouth. Some are good and some are bad, but this verse sends chills down my spine – I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. – Matthew 12:36…Um …. wow….Most of us, including me, will not want to hear and definitely not account for every careless word we have spoken or will speak, but this single verse shows the importance of your words and the power of the impact on someone’s life.Do any of you remember the good ole’ days of church hopping? Where you went from church to church trying to find the one filled with the Holy Spirit?  I do, we went on several quests looking for churches with the Holy Spirit. Do you remember on those trips meeting someone in one of the churches who said something that bothered you, so you didn’t go back to that church? Really, what was said was nothing important or wrong, but it struck you the wrong way, so you moved on.  Now that is power! One word, one sentence and someone has kept someone else, possibly a whole family, from going back to a church. Now luckily we are way beyond church hopping and our skin is much thicker after meeting in assemblies of Believers where debate and analysis is encouraged, but even there and every day your words hold power.  The words spoken in this next verse changed the course of a nation! Now we know the real issue was the mens’ hearts, but they confessed with their mouths what they felt in their hearts.“So they gave a negative report to the Israelites about the land they had scouted: The land we passed through to explore is one that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great size.”- Numbers 13:32Just those few statements and a whole NATION is conquered by fear and the faith they had in Elohim is shattered. Those words caused a stumbling which led to the nation wandering in the desert for 40 years. Words have power.Words and your mouth are not always negative. Your mouth can be one of the greatest tools you have for bringing people into the Truth and spreading the Good News. Your words can save people, encourage them to be more than they ever dreamed, make someone’s day, or better yet make their life.  Good words, from a good mouth, guided by a good heart, produces good fruit.  And He said you will know them by their fruit.  We should strive to produce goodness and blessing from our words.

  • I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.- Deuteronomy 18:18
  • But the message is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may follow it.- Deuteronomy 30:14
  • He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with a shout of joy.- Job 8:21
  • For my mouth tells the truth, and wickedness is detestable to my lips.- Proverbs 8:7
  • Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. – Luke 1:64

As believers of the one true Elohim, we should guard our mouths so we do not speak stumbling blocks to others. We should build up those around us with the Truth and compassion. Do not speak to hurt or condemn others. Speak happiness, guidance, love, and encouragement. Remember, …what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart…, so if you speak evil then what does this say of your heart?Remember to choose how you will use your mouth every time you open it; which will it be?

  • Lie
  • Gossip
  • Swear Allegiance
  • Tell the Good News
  • Boast
  • Spread Hate
  • Spread Fear
  • Speak Truth
  • Encourage
  • Discourage
  • Humiliate
  • Praise

Because, at some point, you will be held accountable for what you say and the impact it has on the lives, and possibly eternity, of others.
