WE ARE NOT HERE TO JUDGE

My name is Fuseini Osman, for those of you who do not know me, I also happen to work as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a local Hospital in one of the cities in Ghana. About 5 days ago, I encountered a case that has motivated this write up. While I was running a weekend shift with two of my colleagues, a-19-year old High School girl came to the Lab with a request card. According to the request, the physician wanted us to carry out a pregnancy test for the young lady. So one of my colleagues quickly carried out the test and realized it was positive. He then said " how does a-19-year old Senior High School girl get pregnant? This is wrong, She should be concentrating on her studies and not indulging in sexual activities"

When I heard this , I remembered something someone once said,

We are not here to judge, we are here to help.

So I said to my colleague, you don't don't know the first thing about this lady, besides the fact that she's pregnant, you don't know where she comes from, how she got pregnant or even who is responsible for that pregnancy. And yet, you are comfortably judging her. The truth is that, most of us are often quick to judge others when we haven't walked in their shoes. For all you know, you would have done worse giving their circumstances. I am not in anyway justifying wrong doing, but I am just saying let's not be quick to judge people. In any case, who decides what is wrong and right, in most cases, our judgement is based on our own opinion of the matter. Remember that while you may see a figure as a '6' , another person may see it as a '9' from a different angle.

Before you judge someone, ask yourself these two questions:

  • What are their circumstances ?
  • Would I have acted any better giving those circumstances ?

You remind of a certain me I was and how it virtually destroyed my relationship with others. Sometimes we need not to speak normatively without first seeking the fact behind why certain people find themselves in certain situations. We must access fully the actual reason behind their predicament and work toward helping them. I recently met a lady on the street from the northern region of Ghana begging for arms with her twins and I decided to use my foundation to help her. Honestly my friends told me to stop but I was poised to help her. When I learnth the reason behind her predicament I wept and now I got her a sewing machine to work with and happily she does not beg again. We should see solutions to problems rather than add to it. Wooow, sometimes we underestimate the impact we can make in people's lives. Just doing something nice for someone (as in your case, getting her a sewing machine) could change their lives for ever. Thanks a lot for passing by.

Well, this isn’t right at all. Judging someone so early shows how weak our character is at the first place and what kind of person we are that we are being so judgemental about a third person whom we don't even know personally or haven't spent time with.
How many times we look in the mirror and ask ourselves a simple question-
”Are we perfect?”
