The Broken Old Man

This one tells the story of a guy I used to cross paths with in Edmonton on a daily basis.

I'd see him on the sidewalk, off in the distance, doing his rounds. Silver hair, always wore a red shirt, walked with a limp. Can't miss him.

He'd look inside every garbage can, take out any pop cans and bottles he'd find. He'd look for fast food restaurant packages with prize stamps still attached, and take those. He'd pick up every cigarette butt and place them in one of his shirt pockets, most likely saving them for later, when I or others weren't around to give him a cigarette when he asked.

One day I gave him close to a half pack of cigarettes. I didn't like the brand.

He started crying.

I'll never forget that. It was also the last time I ever saw him.

Enjoy the art.
Have a good day.

I like it! I like your colourful stuff too, of course, but this is very cool.

It's a bit different. The blood is under the skin for a change! It's good to shake things up from time to time. I'm glad you like it @kiwideb.

Maybe he smoked the lot in one go and dropped dead?

Maybe he traded up to a new life.

You made some old guy cry?

Yeah. Unfortunately. Strange world we live in though. I was on my way to buy beer one day and outside of the establishment was another guy. He asked for $5 so he could eat. I went in, came out with a big of chips and a beef jerky and handed it to him. This guy, on this day, wanted to kill me. He was angry.

I think I know what he wanted the $5 for. He should have just been honest!

Oh God.... :(

Same thoughts.

I like this. Good job.

Poignant story...

There, but for the grace of God, go I.... :O

😄😇😄

@creatr

Thank you for enjoying this one @creatr.

Beggars can't be choosers:)

... ain't that the truth.

Colors are a memory sparker-particularly when they're repeated. This is like the opposite story of That Man who yelled fake sports statistics at This Man
Strong emotion is also a big memory sparker-the yelling man and the crying man, those are things are brains hold onto.

I have trouble forgetting a lot of these people. They're the ones I always paid the most attention to.

If this were a game of CLUE, we'd know whodunnit: Mr. Nonames, on the Sidewalk, with half-a-pack of Viceroys, is who took out the man with the red shirt.

They were actually Export 'A' Green. They have a nickname here. Green Death.

Green Death. I see.

Well this is less vivid than most of your work. I enjoyed your story about the man. You sound like a good man!

Yeah, every now and then I tone it down a bit. It goes along with the story, in a sense, and I thank you for enjoying it. I'm not sure about being a good man, I'd like to think I'm somewhat normal. Thanks though! Compliments are cool with me!

Well that was based on both your story in the post and the one in the comments about giving a man food! Most people would just walk by without paying attention (including me, I have to admit).

I had a brief taste of the hungry life. Even found myself asking for change and smokes for a few weeks just to get by. Certainly can't help everyone, but some people just put off the right vibes. I've probably said no to far more people than I've said yes to. I suppose that's life.
