California, The Greatest State In Greatest Country.
California is known for Hollywood, Beaches, The Golden Gate Bridge and Wine. But this western state has many other facts that may blow your mind.
California is one the most populate state in the United State with an estimated population about 39,250,017 people. This people are spread across the landscape of 163,696 sq. mile. With 240 people per sq. mile that make the state 11th highest density of people in all of America.
California became in the United States after the singing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which marked the end of the Mexican American War which took place back in 1848. The United States compensated Mexico with 15 million dollars for damages caused by the war and Mexico gave up nearly half of their territory including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and parts Colorado Nevada and Utah so California officially became the 31st state back in 1850.
California is known as the land of innovation and inventions. The output computer, Barbie dolls, Disneyland, Frisbee, Blue Jeans and fortune cookies just the name of few things were all invented in this state. California was also the birthplace of McDonald's.
California is the first state to ever become a trillion dollar economy. It is also said that if California was a country it would be the sixth largest economy in the world. Even back at 2050 in California surpass France to become the sixth largest economy in the world.
California is the only state that is hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics twice in 1932 and 1984 and Squaw Valley hosted the Winter Olympics in 1960.
The Golden Gate Bridge. This suspension bridge is iconic for San Francisco. However not everything about this bridge is beautiful. Apparently, every two weeks on average someone jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. Since the bridge opened back in 1937 about 1,600 bodies have been recovered in San Francisco Bay Area. The impact kills about 98% of the people. It is so high when one jump into the water, it's like razor blades just shattered body. They had considered building a barrier but determines it would cost way too much money.
California use inmates to fight forest fires. No this job isn't forced on the prisoners. It is completely voluntary but there is such a big incentive to take this job because it reduces their prison sentence. It's a good thing for them against the militant nature and it pays better than other prison job.
LSD was legal in California until 1966. There was a ton of backlash and scrutiny surrounding this dangerous effects LSD which resulted in governmental actions to make the use of LSD illegal in the state of California. Actually California and Nevada were the first two states to outlaws the manufacturer and also the sale and possession of the drug. Other US state and rest of the world follow this ban shortly after.
Southern California has about 10,000 earthquakes a year. However, most of them are so small that can't actually feel them but they are actually happening. Coming behind Alaska for the state that experiences the most earthquakes. California had to restructure their building codes in order to protect their citizens by creating structures that can withstand the magnitude of an earthquake.
Continuous Rain in California. It rained almost continuously in the state of California from Christmas Eve 1861 until the end of January 1862. This large amount of rain destroyed nearly a quarter of the state turning the Central Valley into an inland sea and bankrupting the state.
California is home some of the tallest tree on earth. Hyperion is a type of coastal redwood in Northern California that is the largest living in the world standing at 379.1 ft. The tree is estimated to contain 186000 cubic feet of wood and it's about 800 years old.
