What Have We Lost To Be Modern?
We all talk about modernisation but, what is it actually? Looking at the proper definition it means “the process of adapting something to modern needs or habits.” When I look over the past few centuries, I feel we have been very lucky. Now life has got a lot easier than before, we can send messages with just a click, get things delivered online and much more.
But we have also paid a price for all our comforts. We have forgotten and lost many important things with it. Now, our priorities, values, morals, and way of life have changed a lot, which have affected our lives at a deeper level.
For example: Mobile phones have brought us close to people who are far away from us but have also separated us from people who are close to us. And we have hundreds of friends socially but still feel lonely.
Does Modernisation Really Suit Us?
“21st century” is a label which we apply for modernization or modern people. Right? Like, we often say “Hey! We live in the 21st Century, so think and be modern or don’t be conservative or narrow minded” sort of things.
But, in general, people often judge others from one perspective or the other and define them as modern or not. One of best examples I see here, in the Indian sub-continent is that people judge others according to their way of English speaking. Suppose, your pronunciation or fluency is not good, then they label you as “illiterate” or backward class people.
How can people relate modern world with a language? Isn’t this being narrow minded in this modern world? And it’s not limited to just this. We all might have seen people judging others according to clothes too. If we wear fashionable and trendy clothes we are modern otherwise we are old fashioned or out dated.
We are growing in many things in this modern world. But, did our thinking grow? Still, we live in a society where English defines one’s literacy and clothes define one’s modern thinking.
If we actually want to grow we first need to check ourselves and our thinking, rather than pointing out “flaws” in others. Everything starts with “You”. So, think big.
