How to find a date in South Korea | Cómo conseguir una cita en Corea del Sur

One of the most common ways to get a girlfriend or a boyfriend in South Korea is through a blind date called 'sogaeting' (소개팅) in Korean. Here is the screenshot of a conversation of two people who were going to go on a blind date.

A: Hello~ I got your number from xxx. (안녕하세요~ xxx한테 연락처 받았어요)
B: Oh yes…(아 네…. )
B: By the way, I am really sorry… (근데 죄송해요…)
B: You are not my type.. (제 스타일이 아니시어요..)
A: Oh okay (아 네)

One says that he or she got the phone number from their mutual friend. Unfortunately, as you can probably tell by the conversation, it seems like this blind date isn’t going to work out. I understand that it is somewhat contradicting to call it a blind date. But, that is what technology has allowed us to do in today's world. Supposedly, you can be judged on your appearance within the seven seconds. In this case, you can be judged within the seven seconds through a photo.

In South Korea, going on a group blind date is pretty common especially in college. This group blind date is set up by one or two of the participants. The organizers form two groups of friends matching the number of male and female. Even though it takes some pressure off to go on a group blind date versus an individual blind date, not everyone is going to walk out with a smile from a group blind date unfortunately.

While a blind date can be taken lightly in some parts of the world, going on a blind date is one of the most popular ways to meet your life partner in Korea. Even though not all Koreans find their future husbands and wives through blind dates, a lot of Koreans still go through this blind date procedure to meet the love of their lives.

A typical blind date procedure goes like this. First, you ask your friend to set you up with someone or some people may even volunteer themselves to set you up with their friends. You normally go through a screening process by looking at a photo of your date first, which is a typical scene in any dating sites or apps. Things that are important next to his or her appearance are what school he or she went to and what he or she does for a living especially when looking for a potential husband or wife.



Generally, you would meet with both your match-maker friend and the person, whom you are on a blind date with, at a café somewhere. Even though it is a bit awkward at first, your friend will try to help break the ice between the two. But, your match-maker will just leave after a short introduction.

If the date goes well, you can get the phone number directly from your date after your first date or get it through your mutual friend. It is a good sign to get the number directly right after the first date though. If you do succeed getting the number right away, that means you are most likely to go on a second date. After a numeral dates, you could possibly develop your dates into a relationship. Well, that was a little bit of food for thought. What are your thoughts on this, my fellow steemians?

Uno dice que él o ella conseguió el número de teléfono de su amigo común. Desafortunadamente, como probablemente puedan saber por la conversación, parece que esta cita a ciegas no va a funcionar. Entiendo que es algo contradictorio llamarlo como una cita a ciegas. Pero, eso es lo que la tecnología nos ha permitido hacer en el mundo que vivimos hoy. Supuestamente, puedes ser juzgado por tu apariencia dentro de los siete segundos. En este caso, puede ser juzgado dentro de los siete segundos a través de una foto.

En Corea del Sur, ir a una cita a ciegas del grupo es bastante común, especialmente en la universidad. Uno o dos de los participantes planean la cita a ciegas del groupo. Los organizadores forman dos grupos de amigos para que coincida el número de hombres y mujeres. A pesar de que ir a una cita a ciegas del grupo es un poco más relajante comparando a una cita a ciegas individual, desafortunadamente no todos se irán con una sonrisa de una cita a ciegas del grupo.

Mientras que una cita a ciegas se puede tomar muy ligera en algunas partes del mundo, ir a una cita a ciegas es una de las formas más populares de conocer a tu compañero de vida en Corea. Aunque no todos los coreanos encuentran a sus futuros esposos y esposas a través de citas a ciegas, muchos coreanos siguen haciendo la cita a ciegas para conocer el amor de sus vidas.
