Here I am Lucia again trying to find a good and virtuous topic to inscribe and share at the same time to learn about.

So the topic for today is "Act of God".

The world is sinking as sea levels rise and floods occur more frequently. Now we are seeing events of one in a thousand years and the houses are ruined, washed or destroyed in another way. Those who are insured often stay outside when they discover that the insurance company rejects their refund request. The reasons given are staggering and range from an Act of God to one that forgot to include the flood in their politics.

Under normal circumstances, one can forget to include floods because they live far from a river or stream and their location has never experienced an increase in water before. This, however, is not a good reason to leave it behind as some in the recent floods of Victoria and parts of New South Wales discovered.

Huge storms and heavy rains sent an ocean of water down from Queensland after the 2010-2011 cyclone. This impacted the areas of New South Wales that stunned the residents. The man holes in the streets were raised when water spilled from the drainage system and flooded as streams ran through their homes.

The question is: what is an act of God when it comes to paying the insurance? Is not all the result of rain and natural events? Well, not exactly! The definition of such is that it is inevitable through the use of precautions and preventive measures. This allows many companies to find a loophole in their policy.

For example, take the case of a flooded stream next to a property in Wollongong, NSW. This happened as a result of a massive storm, but the insurance company avoided the payment and why? Because it was determined that landscaping around the house acted as a channel for water. It was discovered that this was legitimate because the owner had contributed to the entry of water to the property.

While these companies have a great burden on their hands in light of the number of natural events, one wonders if insurance is the answer. The cost of this is a strong impact on the pocket of the hip and if the end result is that one is not covered, then would not it have been better to place the money in a bank to earn interest over the years that the policy had been working?

Insurance is a big risk and if one can or can not safely enforce a claim, the conclusion is that with so many floods and homes destroyed there must be a breaking point. My answer is not to have insurance on anything, but to trust in the Spirit to protect me. After all, if we are talking about an act of God, then that is not the place to trust.
