The Harlem Mermaid's Inspirational Message.

I saw a heart-warming video today that had me tearing up.

I definitely did not expect to get emotional when seeing a video about a woman who is a mermaid in her spare time on my feed but the woman's message ended up being beautiful.

The Harlem mermaid says in the video that she was abused as a kid, very lonely, and had no friends. Then one day she saw "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid" and she says she fell in love with the mermaid. She wanted to be a mermaid but it wasn't until she got the internet that she realized other people were out there wanting to be mermaids too!

She started out photoshopping her face onto her favorite mermaids body but eventually was welcomed into the mermaid community with open arms. You can see the joy and confidence oozing from her in spite of the fact that she is a chubby, older woman that many would not find beautiful.

She even found her mer-wrangler.

Her affection name for her husband who not only embraced her desire to be a mermaid but made her tails! He said all she needed was a tail and knowing nothing about how to sew or make patterns he found a youtube video and set out to make his wife her mermaid tail. How adorable is that? It is clear from the video how authentic, and deep their love for one another is and Harlem mermaid has no issues calling him her soulmate.

The message she wants us to take away from her story.

The part that really warmed my little heart was at the end of the video when she says regardless of your age, shape, or gender just be what you want to be. This is such a sweet message and while many people may scoff at the Harlem mermaid for being different it is clear she is REALLY happy. I prefer to wear my cat tail and ears to being a mermaid but even if you aren't into dressing up or being weird the message is the same. Life is ultimately too short to let societal standards of "acceptable" get in the way of pure unadulterated happiness, right?
