Bird Attack – Help Save My Coconut Trees

There are these birds that have ravaged a lot of palm trees and coconut trees in my area. They come in massive numbers and pluck the leaves which they use in building their nest. I had thought they had gone away because all the trees they attacked had died and we haven’t been seeing them for some time now.

How It Started

I planted two coconut trees about 3 years ago, they were from an agricultural farm in the eastern part of my country and I got them when I traveled for vacation. The specie is known to produce big coconuts so we got them and decided to plant them in our compound in Lagos.

When the bird attack first started in the area where I live, the coconut tree were still very small and may not have been noticed compared to the tall ones that stood out along the main roads. But of recent I started noticing that the leaves of the coconut looked like something someone or something was shredding. I woke up the other day to hear a lot of bird noises, not singing but too many of them whistling at the same time. I came out and discovered they were flying in and out of the coconut trees and plucking their leaves. I chased them away by shouting but once I was inside they came around again.

The Solution I Tried And Failed

I tied some black nylon on the coconut trees leaves and even made what looks like a scarecrow near the tree to scare them away but these birds seem not to be afraid of them. The birds fly very fast and are smaller than canary I’m not a bird expert so don’t even know their name. They don’t bother all the other trees in the compound just the coconuts tree.

I am a bit bothered about this because the palm trees and coconut trees along the main road these birds have attacked all died. I couldn’t have planted these coconut trees and waited for them for 3 years only for some bird to kill it. My wife was even saying as long as the birds keep shredding the leaves the coconut tree won’t produce coconuts. So we need to act fast before it is too late as the life of the coconut trees are at stake.

Wow! That is a very expensive idea. We're looking at about 25ft long, at least 15ft wide and probably more than 25ft high as well to allow for growing higher. That's like building a green house. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. Cheers.

I hope you find a way to preserve the coconuts.

I do hope so too. I have been searching online too, 1 option is to connect bombs round the tree and wait for all the birds to seat on it and then I click the button that blows up the whole tree including all the birds. Lol. People can be very funny.
