User Experiences

I have been studying experiences for a while now. Primarily User Experiences. As in user of apps, systems, webpages.

I think a lot about experiences, what is it really? Is it something I can design, create? Can I plan it, "build" it, offer it to others?

When it comes to digital artefacts I think the answer is yes.

Experiences are personal and consists of feelings. To create experiences it takes a lot of empathy and it also take some methods to research what people expect. You need the empathy to be able to interpret the results of your research. Then you have a solid ground to start designing User Experiences.

I think that Customer Experiences, travels and other experiences can be designed the same way. Through research combined with your own empathy and knowledge of the target group.

Experiences as a part of our private lives

What strikes me is that even in our private lives, we strive to find new experiences. It's an industri that keeps growing all the time. Material things aren't as important anymore. I wonder if the reason is that material things are a more common part of our lives than before (at least in the western part of the world). To find new experiences have become more important, for many of us, than owning things. We have a need to feel free (another experience) and also, maybe, to decrease things that just turns into waste.

I guess there is some stuff we feel that we "need" to own, like mobile phones, but mainly because of the experience of owning it and the things we use it for. The mobile brings us new experiences, other things we own just make us happy for a while, when we buy them.

New experiences?

Is there any possibility that we can live happier lives if we own less things? Can we feel more free? What is the next step? Simulated environments to experience a nice, familiar dinner feeling while we are on a business trip? Digital places where we can go to experience foreign countries, without traveling?

What do you think? Is this just a trend that will pass or is it something that will continue grow and also develop over time?

There are enormous possibilities to design experiences with our digital technologies but it's also important to remember, the small everyday experiences from nature, our kids, partners, friends and so on. And that these experiences are, at least for me, more important than owning material things, or what do you think?
