What Does Happiness Mean To You?

Happiness Is Essential!

We come into this world as a single entity and leave this realm alone.

Yet what transpires in between is one of the most miraculous wonders of the universe.

And one of the emotions that adds meaning, adds value to life is the state of happiness.

I believe that when you're not happy with the way things are going in your professional and personal space, you lose a sense of purpose or drive that allows you to move forward in the journey of life.

What Is Happiness?

Happiness is a subjective term. Happiness means different things to different people, in psychology happiness is:

a mental or emotional state of well-being which can be defined by, among others, positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

Some people find happiness to be unpredictable.

Some deem it unattainable.

Some consider it a never-ending journey.

While we all have different opinions on what happiness truly means, equally true is the fact that we desire it in varying measures and magnitudes.

Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence. - Aristotle

Happiness Is A Choice

We always have choices in life!

We choose to be good or bad.

We choose to give or take.

We choose to be happy or sad.

There is a fine balance of the different forms of negative and positive energies around us, and to experience the vibrations of these energies as they sync and enter our lives is a marvelous thing.

Happiness is one such positive energy that once imbibed, immediately shows drastic positive changes in our mood, outlook and overall well-being.

Happiness is NOT about what happens around YOU.

It is what happens within YOU.

You can CHOOSE to be HAPPY.

Now!

How To Be Happy?

Happiness is unlimited, and so are the ways to achieve it. It varies from person to person, but at the core of attaining happiness is the sense of contentment and the feeling of being at peace with oneself.

- Control Emotions

To achieve a state of bliss, one has to learn to control various emotions like worry, fear, anger, greed, etc. The perfect balance of these emotions in turn has a reciprocal effect on the state of happiness and it is bound to increase.

- Worry Less

An important thing is to keep yourself busy all the time so you don't have time to worry about unnecessary things . Keeping yourself busy doesn't always mean to immerse yourself in work but to be engaged in some pleasure activities as well. It'll certainly keep you happier.

- Be Optimistic

Have you heard the saying ,

A pessimistic person forgets to laugh and an optimistic person laughs to forget.

It is good to be positive in thinking.

By being an optimist, you expect your dreams to come true.

If you are optimistic, you'll have more chances of feeling happy.

- Enjoy Life

Love every moment of life, make the best use of opportunities that are given to you.

Don't let life slip away by while you're busy in accumulating more wealth and riches.

There's a time, place and duration for everything.

Remember what Buddha said,

Desire is the root cause of all sorrow and unhappiness.

Check desire and you're bound to lead a happy life.

- Be Confident

The worst enemy of happiness is inferiority complex.

Don't give importance to your limitations/shortcomings.

Empower yourself, don't define and restrict yourself in terms of shape, size, color, status or education.

Don't let societal constraints and norms be impediments for achieving greatness.

- Relax

Pursue a hobby of your interest, keep yourself engaged. This will give you time to enjoy the different facets of life.

Set aside some time for entertainment like listening to music, watching TV, doing art, embroidery, etc.

- Family/Friends

Have cordial relations with family members, friends, relatives, co-workers, boss, etc. This allows you to create a stress-free and peaceful environment for yourself. A happy man makes others around him happy .

- Respect Your Decisions

Try to take the right decisions, and since you are your own master and guide it is your responsibility to put thought into your ever action and move.

Take suggestions from others, but the final decision must rest in your own hands.

And be at peace with your decision whatever may be the outcome.

You Deserve Happiness

Nobody is perfect, we have our flaws, yet we find perfection within whatever God has blessed us with.

As I share this blog, I'm happy that I wrote this article which allows me to share my learning and experiences.

The little things in life sometimes prove to be a great source of happiness, we just need to be willing to discover them and make an effort to accept them for what they are.

Robert Anton Wilson had a saying that's great to meditate on:
Who is the master who makes the grass green?

Thank you @cryptodan , a very nice quote indeed!

Happiness doesn't need to be subjective. It just needs a better definition than the one you've given.

Ayn Rand defined it as follows:

"Happiness is that state of consciousness which proceeds from the achievement of one’s values. If a man values productive work, his happiness is the measure of his success in the service of his life. But if a man values destruction, like a sadist—or self-torture, like a masochist—or life beyond the grave, like a mystic—or mindless “kicks,” like the driver of a hotrod car—his alleged happiness is the measure of his success in the service of his own destruction. It must be added that the emotional state of all those irrationalists cannot be properly designated as happiness or even as pleasure: it is merely a moment’s relief from their chronic state of terror.

Neither life nor happiness can be achieved by the pursuit of irrational whims. Just as man is free to attempt to survive by any random means, as a parasite, a moocher or a looter, but not free to succeed at it beyond the range of the moment—so he is free to seek his happiness in any irrational fraud, any whim, any delusion, any mindless escape from reality, but not free to succeed at it beyond the range of the moment nor to escape the consequences." The Objectivist Ethics, from The Virtue of Selfishness, p. 28.

You'll notice that happiness is the achievement of values - and while people's values may (in general) differ, happiness can only be achieved by pursuing and achieving them. Essentially, to be happy, one needs to identify their values and pursue them.

The very fact that you base happiness over another person's opinion is subjective. This is my definition of happiness. Many people are not in a position to achieve the values you so define, yet irrespective they can attain a state of happiness.

Differing opinions doesn't mean a particular thing is subjective. You may feel hot while I feel cold, but the temperature itself is not subjective. People may feel happiness in varying degrees, but its source is the same: the pursuit and achievement of values.

Can you explain to me how someone can be happy without having achieved or pursued their values?

subjective

based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

Happiness is

based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

A simple example - Many people in India value education, yet they are not able to achieve it due to various reasons. Yet you'll see them happy. There are many personal examples, this is just an overview and I'm not going into detail. As mentioned in my article,

at the core of attaining happiness is the sense of contentment and the feeling of being at peace with oneself.

It's clear you aren't open to a real discussion about this, so this will be my last comment.

Happiness isn't about the immediate and instant achievement of every value one holds. Does the person in your example hold only one value? What has made that person happy if their value of education isn't being completely fulfilled? Any number of other values, or the partial achievement of them.

No doubt they can learn things on their own through experimentation. They might have watched someone else dancing and imitated the motions, now learning the dance. Or any of their numerous other values could be fulfilled, making them happy: things like a healthy family, a roof over their heads, food to eat, money to be earned, and so on.

I offered you an objective definition of happiness; you refused it. I'm not arguing that peoples values are subjective (most of them are). But I am arguing that happiness, as a state of being, has a very simple, objective definition.

I agree.. sometimes some people are surrounded by negativity and darkness...in those moments, they have to choose to be happy and choose to be a beacon for others to follow...
I've been through a lot of trouble growing up, as most people do, and when someone asks me how I am still happy I always tell them that happiness is a choice, in the same way being sad is also a choice.. if you wanna live longer you've gotta live happier.. surrounding yourself with positive people is one of the best ways to do it :) for me prayer helps too :)

thank you @andreanoronhak , great and valid points. Happiness is certainly a choice and the power of prayer is unique !

Well said @jznsamuel!

May we all learn to see and make the choices towards happiness throughout our days!

Agreed, thank you for your beautiful comment @inphiknit
