I do not know the customs of their countries, in Argentina on Fridays they are days of chopped cold meats, cheeses, pizzas, a good glass of beers or fernet and as a finishing touch a good Celtic film with a lot of action, swords and shields, from there arises the idea To publish the post of legendary weapons.

Today I want to share with you the legend of "Durandarte el espada de Roldan", surfing the web I cross with this beautiful legend, speaks of one of the legendary weapons best known throughout history, a beautiful story that begins well.

This powerful legendary weapon called Durandarte, Durandal or Durendal, better known as the "Sword of Roldan", is one of the most well-known and desired Middle Ages swords in history.

Roldan was the first-born of "Gisela of France and nephew of Charlemagne" in spite of being very young was a brilliant and brave fighter of the justice, when fulfilling "17 years" was named by Carlomagno Caballero and in this act was delivered of hand of His uncle the legendary Durandal sword.

The knight "Roldan" was a powerful medieval warrior, also known as Roland and Orlando, one of the most courageous warriors and commander that had Charlemagne to his service, not only known for being a brilliant knight, was also recognized for being "the Count Of the Mark of Brittany "

The legend of Roldan is one of the most widespread and admired stories of the time, there are hundreds of stories and legends around it, a very widespread passage has to do with the mystical "summit of the Pyrenees" found in the passage between "France and Spain", one of the highest peaks, there is "Monte Perdido".

The legend says that there is a "Magic Palace" built with beautiful stucco stones in majestic gardens, a brilliant work built by the "enchantress of the summits" that to protect it made a magic spell so that no one can enter it except A person worthy of a brave heart.

One of the most significant battles is in the Arab invasion, in the region of the Pyrenees when Charlemagne with his forces is defeated forced to order the withdrawal, the Franco army commanded by Count Roldan is ambushed, falling the knight to the ground " Concealed by the dead body of his horse, this saved his life, but also by not being seen was abandoned by his own army.

When he recovered, he found himself alone and without a mount, he had to reach "France" walking slowly for more than two days, pursued by his enemies, he reached to reach "Ordesa" but he had to cross the mountains, as a brave fighter managed to climb the mountain , Their enemies were already close, they realized this by releasing the tracking dogs, within a few minutes they reached the brave knight, he defended himself by killing the animals with his sword, but exhausted the little energy that remained, no longer He had more strength to fight with his enemies.

With his last forces I tried to destroy his legendary sword, I did not want this powerful weapon to remain in enemy hands, striking against the stone, its power was such that it broke the stone in two, so that "from the top of the Lost Mountain" To see his beloved land for the last time.

When the enemies arrived at the top of the mountain, they found the Count Roldán dead on the ground, which has since been called the "Roldan Gap"; we can also remember other events such as the "Roldan Steps", " Roldan "And Pierrondan"

After this battle and death of "Roldan" numerous legends arise of what happened with the legendary sword, one of them speaks of "Bernardo del Carpio" the opponent who killed Roldan and appropriated his sword, the other version says Who was buried with his sword remaining in the "monastery of Santa María la Real de Aguilar de Campoo" remained there until "year 1522" in a visit of Carlos I took him. "That sword can be seen in the Royal Armory of Madrid."

The other version is that it is in the "bottom of the lake Carucedo in El Bierzo", but the most important is that they are in "Rocamadour" in a monastery called "Our Lady and the church of San Miguel"

The Friars assures that it is the "sword of Durandal" that the same "Roldan Embedded it" in a stone placed on "the buildings of the Sanctuary"

This theory was never discussed and remained there for several centuries until the year 2011 that was removed and taken to the "Cluny Museum of Paris to be exposed"

The legendary "Durandarte, Durandal, Durendal or Sword of Roldan" was companion of the count until the day that died "in the battle of Roncesvalles the 15 of August of 788"

Very interesting story. Thanks for finding it and sharing it with us. Swords are always intriguing, very beautiful as an artwork, and hard to imagine fighting a war with them. Very brutal. Then again, what war isn't. Thanks again for another great story.

Many thanks dear friend @ddschteinn for your kind words and always doing company in my work.

You are very welcome.
