The ordeal of getting your car registered.

in #life7 years ago

So you got your new registration sticker in the mail?

They are making it much harder now.

It's supposed to be easier because there's only one sticker instead of two.

Inspections don't get their own sticker.

Let me tell you what a pain in the butt it has been for me so far.

I buy a preowned car last year.

I am told the inspection is free at the dealership.

Well that's nice because it will save me about 30 bucks.

I drive up to the dealership after work today..... which is a good distance.

I tried calling them multiple times but every time I got in contact with the service department they just hung up.

So I drive up there to get my free inspection and I'm told that last month they stopped doing free inspections.

"And yet when I bought the car one of the selling points was the free inspections that I was promised each year." I said.

"Yeah we don't have those anymore." They said.

It ended up with me storming out and leaving but not before I was told that it would take a couple of days of waiting before I can be seen to get the inspection.

"Should have called." They said.

Exasperated I drive to SpeeDee Oil Change because I know they charge $25 for inspections.

There is a 3 hour wait and I'm told to come back at 8:00 in the morning.

I drive all up and down the busy streets and can't find any place that can get me in.

Finally I find a little hole in the wall inspection place and after 30 minutes I am good to go.

I drive up to Tom Thumb to get my registration sticker but they are out.

I drove it to another one and they are also out.

I go to the government building that I know does registration stickers and the line is all the way out the door.

After finally arriving at the fourth Tom Thumb I find one that has registration stickers.

Even though the bottom of the sticker says $51 for most cars it is $82 to get my car registered.

Apparently the heavier your car is the more your registration will cost for some reason.

The funny thing is she didn't even check to see if I had inspected the car when she gave me the sticker.

I could have just walked in and gotten my registration tag without getting it inspected at all.

I'm not sure if there's even a reason to get it inspected anymore when you can apparently just go get your registration sticker without getting it inspected.

It doesn't matter because it's all said and done now.

$110 or so.

Much more than I expected because I was thinking to would be $51 like it says on the registration thing itself and then also free to get the inspection done at the dealership.

It took me all day but I'm glad that I finally got the ordeal over with and I won't have to do it for another year.

Getting your car registered is no fun at all.

Wow, what a pain in the ass. Here I just renew online, print out a temporary, and my new registration arrives in about a week.

What about inspections?

We need them here in New York too. And now cars have to be plugged into a computer in order to pass so they actually have to be inspected. When I used to take my car to my friend's garage he'd ask if I actually wanted an inspection, or just the sticker. Those were the days.

Sounds like you had a really rough day. My husband is from Virginia and he always had to go through the inspection mess. Lots of cussing on those days. Thankfully in TN there aren't any inspections, you only have one license plate for the back, and you can renew online for $24.00 a year. I lived in 3 different states and always kept TN tags just so I didn't have to deal with inspections and having to have a second license plate for the front and double the fees.

I really like Texas but I feel like lately they've been finding ways to make us bend backwards which is really difficult when none of us have been making any money this year so far. $24 is a great price.
