Cole's Story: Taken Into Custody

in #life6 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I'm in a series about the outlaw Cole Younger who was a partner of Jesse James and whose gang has been decimated by a botched robbery attempt at the bank in Northfield, Minnesota in 1876. Cole and his brothers Bob and Jim are all that's left of the gang, and captured. Frank and Jesse James have escaped.

Cole and his brothers are greeted with a large crowd of gawkers when they arrive in Medelia in the back of a wagon. People are in shock at what they're seeing. Instead of the fierce, evil, mean, nasty, dangerous outlaws that they've heard about for years that strike fear in the hearts of men, they are looking at a pitiful sight.

As a reminder, here's what Cole and Bob looked like in their prime, Cole is standing on the left, Bob is on the right. Jesse is sitted left with his brother Frank.

The men are wounded, exhausted, bloody, muddy, half starved from being on the run day and night with almost no food... and they look as meek as church mice! They're taken to a hotel room where a doctor cleans them up and one of the slugs from Cole is removed, the one in his hip.

A strange procession

Jim, who had been shot in the jaw, is checked out, the doctor pulling a piece of loose jaw out with 2 teeth attached to it! ouch. They are on the same bed recovering and looking pitiful when the Sheriff allows a large group to start filing in. It's okay, they're just there to gawk.

The people filed in past the bed, the men staring at them and the people staring at the men. Lol. they did things a little differently back then! Arrangements are made to take them by train to Faribault because they have an escape-proof jail there. Reporters are arriving of course, gotta love the Press.

They're also on the crowded train with the Boys. A guard sits with each one. The vice-president of the bank in Mankato, who the Boys originally planned to rob, sat down next to Cole to give him a piece of his mind. He said "You and all the others are a despicable gang and a disgrace to our country."

Cole says back to him.."Would you like to know the difference between what you do and what I do?"
"Yes."
"It's very simple. You rob the poor and I rob the rich."
Indignant, the banker got up and left.. sputtering something about madness. lol.

Anything to make a buck

In those days they did what would be unthinkable today but whenever famous killers or criminals were killed they would put the bodies on public display for all to see and the pictures would be run in all the newspapers, usually with the bodies laid in a coffin and stood up at an angle.

Well, I don't think they had the same public display for the gang members who didn't make it. Those were the young kid, Clelland Miller and long time members Charles Pitts and Bill Chadwell. But they DID take photos of those three, and those are strange in themselves because it looks like they were propped up on a bench or a chair after rigor mortis had set in, and with their eyes open!

I know it's a little bit gruesome but here is what they had made, a printed-up card which they sold for 25 cents, and these things sold like hot cakes, they couldn't print enough of these things! The top photos are of the young Clelland on the left and Bill Chadwell on the right. The second row is Charles Pitts and Cole, the third row is Jim on the left an Bob on the right:

Notice they had no shirts on so people could see the bullet wounds. I bet these would be highly sought after collectors items today. I wonder what people did with them? Parents could keep them on the fridge and say to their kids.."be good or you'll end up like these guys!"

That's all for today folks, tomorrow we'll see how the trial goes and catch back up with Belle.

I think this fascination with criminals continue Janton, look at all the TV shows that focus on killers and their heinous crimes. Not my cup of tea!

howdy today angiemitchell! Oh I know, I watch very little tv and it seems like almost all the shows are like that, at least over here..that or medical dramas.

The worse of the worse are the real live stories that actually happened. I like the made up stories, they are easier to deal with, lol.

ha! I know what you mean, the made up ones are easier to dismiss.

You just can't help it and not make fun of the dead, lol. Now I feel bad that I am laughing!!! Oh well, they were criminals, but we still should be probably praying for their souls instead of laughing. So please God have a mercy on their souls and give them a chance to repent. Getting caught it's actually better for their souls, but only if they are sorry for what they did. Which doesn't seem like they do.

howdy again Miss Lena..yes they knew what they were getting into. Well the kid probably didn't, he thought it was just going to be a fun, easy time getting to ride with the famous outlaws.
I don't get the sense that they were sorry at all unfortunately.

Thanks so much for commenting!

it's always my pleasure Janton and I upvote as well, although my vote is next to nothing, lol.

And looks like they do not have any remorse, except the fact the got caught, lol.

yes, typical criminals, no remorse until they get caught and then like you said, it's just being sorry for being caught but Cole did say he was sorry about some things and I tend to believe him, he had a side of integrity about him.

The first thing they told Mrs. J was not to ever believe a word any of the inmates say! lol. it's sad but most of them are professional con men.

Oh I see. Mrs. J has to stay cool. I can't imagine how can she do it. I really admire her.

And I didn't read anything about Cole being sorry. Is that in the next chapter?

Miss Lena..about Mrs. J, yes she is very tough and has what is called "the discerning of spirits" and has always been able to tell what someone was like the instant she saw them, not just a first impression thing but knowing what their problem is like some kind of deviancy or something like that. Unbelievably accurate with a knowing about people so this gift serves her well in this job because she's led by the Holy Spirit.
The other women already don't like her unfortunately but she's been working in the men's section and may stay there. The men are pretty respectful because she treats them with respect.

as far as Cole being sorry, I haven't written the next part so I don't know if that will be in there or not but probably! lol.

Wow, I would love to meet her. She must be a very special lady, but I guess you are a special too, if she married you, lol. By the way, I didn't know women can work as guards in man's prison.

howdy Miss Lena! how are you doing today? I still haven't gotten over to your post but since I just remembered it when I saw your name and I'm embarrassed that I didn't get there, I'm going there after I finish this comment.

Mrs. J special? yes, very unique. It can be very frustrating because she is not like anyone else. she always sees things differently from other people but basis everything in life from a spiritual angle or view and that changes most things! lol.

As far as women working as guards, in state or federal prisons, at least in the United States, women work only in the women's sections.
But in county jails, at least in Texas, the women work in both the womens and the men's sections so it's very strange in a way.

In the women's section a male guard can't go into any cells without a female guard with him but in the men's section the women go into the cells alone all the time!

Mrs. J has to go into cells alone, with no cameras, with 7 or 8 big, black, mean looking criminals! The good news is that it is a Federal crime to touch a guard so if they try anything their life is going to be a whole lot worse and most of them are trying to be on good behavior because they are waiting for their trial to start or or in their trial or are doing a short stint in jail for a minor crime.

The other good news is that she has the Great Holy Ghost with her and angels and the prisoners see her as a bright shaft of light in a very dark place so they are nice to her.

She shows no fear but one time she was nervous when she had to go in and cuff a very angry, HUGE, huge black man and she wasn't sure if he was going to cooperate but he did, he was so big she wasn't sure the hand cuffs would fit! lol.

Needless to say I am praying for her constantly too. But we both feel confident that God set her in there. The other women don't like her because they cuss like sailers and yell with their filthy mouths and attitudes and she is quiet, friendly and nice to the inmates and they don't like that. But so far it has worked out better because she has been in the men's section so she doesn't have to work with the women guards. The men guards are all nice to her.

What's crazy though is that they teach the guards all kinds of self defense
moves and how to get out of holds if someone grabs you, etc etc...BUT they don't teach you that until you get your jailers certification in 90 days! lol. I guess they want to see if you survive the first 90 days before they teach you how to be a professional jailer. lol. crazy and backwards.

sorry I'm rambling now. I'll let you go.

Their mustaches are not big enough!

yeah plus when the put them all in prison they made them shave, really looked weird then!

Hello @janton. Very gruesome to think they took photos afterwards.

Howdy sir cryptoandcoffee! well sir, it was a different time for sure because it was a big public show and event when they would put out the bodies of famous killers who got shot.
Otherwise it was also a big show when they hung people in public too. It's all gruesome!

Having met their maker I am sure didn't come as a surprise to these guys. Having a card of one of these infamous outlaws would probably make you very rich.

This Honus Wagner card's value is presently estimated at 2.8 million dollars. It was produced by the American Tobacco Co. There were only 200 hundred produced. Honus Wagner did not want to endorse the card because he did not want to promote tobacco use to his many young fans.

haha! that's amazing bigsweed! I'm sure the card of those guys can be found somewhere for the right price! lol. thanks bigsweed!

They do look a little frightened alright. Hahaha

yeah like Irishmen that land in Texas the firs time!
amazingly none of them had ever seen the inside of a jail before, let alone prison.
It ain't like they have Mrs. J there to encourage them.
She does have murderers in her block though but she treats them with respect so they treat her with respect.

He he, those collecting cards must have been the "Steem monsters" of those days.

/FF

ha! Well they were all the rage just like Steem monsters seem to be so in that respect they were!
