RE: Intergalactic travel, Warp drive in reality / Межгалактические путешествия (featuring @essentia as author)

in #life9 years ago (edited)

I'm sorry, but even if Warp Drive was possible, it would take more energy than the entire mass of Jupiter converted into energy. Less mass needed, but still lots of problems with Warp physics.

It doesn't matter though, because even with slower than light travel, I still think we can reach the stars and spread out. In fact, there's already a group working on laser sail designs. Listen to Philip Lubin give his talk on the subject here:

Let me repeat - laser sails exist RIGHT NOW, and if we can build a big enough one in space, with a large laser array - we can go to other stars with our current level of technology. Proxima Centauri B is looking pretty promising! The Breakthrough Starshot program is going to ACTUALLY DO THIS.

If you want to know more about HOW we might COLONIZE another star system, please follow my "Star-Steaders" fiction series.

I'm going to detail out everything about creating a colonization program. Ship design, relativistic travel, energy sources, infrastructure, ectogenesis, ecopeisis(terraforming), sociological change. It's NOT an "action story," but a HARD science story, similar to Andi Weir's "The Martian.

I would love to get your thoughts! Cheers.

EDIT: Rebuttal argument it up!
