Longest running unfunny joke : Finding your passion

in #life8 years ago

Hello Steemian,
I hope you all are having a great day. Unlike me who still can not answer a simple question. Questions like a third grader would answer with more determination and confidence. WHO YOU WANT TO BE?

Warning: I would be putting my personal views on this subject. You may have a different opinion than me and I am ok with that. And if you agree, you are not alone.

I still remember my mother asking me the question who you want to be when you grow up. I was at sixth standard then and I replied doctor and after a few months later someone else asked me the very same question and my answer got changed to Fighter pilot and after few months a doctor and so on. But I have never encountered a single person in that period who would pose me with “Beta, What is your passion?”.
But now every second geezer would have these exact words, in the exact order at his disposals for a burnt out fellow like me, “Do not waste your time here, Follow your Passion” and we are supposed to immediately know the very reason for our existence. Just like that by uttering these words the old fellow has answered millions of unanswered questions.
These are very same questions that you ask yourself over a long walk on a quiet beach or while sitting on the bench in a less crowded park. While riding the bike on the familiar route which you have traveled hundreds maybe thousands of times.

Being from a middle-class family I had seen the struggle that my family has put into achieving goals. The dreams were little inclined towards a financial stability. And I am sure most of you would agree. If you are from Middle-class family the word passion has no meaning to you unless you have gone out and seen the world by yourself and I mean explore. And by the time you get out, it is too late.

In middle-class India, when a kid answers that he wants to be a dancer and not a doctor, a murder happens. Every time a kid answers that he wants to be an artist and not an engineer, a murder happens. Every time a kid answers something other than the obvious choice, a murder happens. A dream, a vision get slaughtered right then and there by the people who asked the questions. Immediately the kid would be slammed. Without delay he will be lectured that dancing is something of extracurricular activity, Painting is an extracurricular activity. These are not to be pursued or not worthy of making as a profession. The worst of all is the guy who is advising the kid about these might have zero exposure to the world of Dancing and Art.

The meaning of passion in the middle-class person's dictionary could be roughly something like this

something that is done in leisure time, the mode of entertainment and is NOT TO BE taken as a serious profession. A passion is just a fancy word for a hobby.

And after this meticulous conditioning of the kid, when he goes out and sees someone who is pursuing a passion. He would do the same thing that has been done to him. Discouraging the person who is pursuing. And the chain reaction continues till he becomes old. He regrets the decisions he made, Steps he took. And finally advise someone who he sees is heading the same way “Do not waste your time here, Follow your Passion”

All I am saying is that, If someone said something that does not make sense, It is OK. Look for sense. Ask him to make sense. Understand what is the meaning of it. And then, only then maybe you will be able to see that anything which is done with dedication has always attracted attention and appreciation.

And I am yet to find my passion. All I am trying to say is that "it sucks to be me."

This post is dedicated to all those who know what it means to pursue a passion.

Very well understand the scenario. My parents were somehow different when it comes to telling me what I should do. The first thing I remember is my mom buying me a water colour set when I was in second standard - everyone else in the family nearly scolded mom for it as I was only supposed use colour pencils or crayons. Financial difficulty was always there, but once joined the college they never asked me anything. In general in school also there were practically no restrictions - but that brought a sense of responsibility so heavy that I was not able to deviate from studies and few things that I used to do. Originally I wanted to be a bank manager :) I think I was super lucky in many ways as I had friends who had actually guided / helped all the way.

You are in crypto currency, so basically a bank manager. :D
