It is very sad and regrettable that this situation occurs in countries so poor that they need so much help.
That people who are supposedly going to help, want to turn people's charity into a business, are causing people who really need help to stop receiving it. I'm sorry that it is.

You hit the nail right on the head!

I can see the abandonment issue being a huge concern yet people wanting to help. I’d rather see give resources and come help til the land but no personal interaction. Personally I prefer the doula work i do to help women empowerment for low income women, particularly women of color locally. I’ve always felt locally we have so many of our own issues. Help at home first. But that’s just me. Thank you for the “post to make us think.”

Yes the way it harms the children both psychologically and that they actually keep them in worse physical conditions to stir sympathy makes this very much a moral crime with real victims. I too think it is important to work locally with our volunteering. I love your idea though that when we're volunteering abroad it should be with the land in a way that helps the people, but not working directly with the youths, especially orphans.

It is a different perspective from what I thought a work of detachment and love.
Now that I have this information I would not participate in the "volunturismo"

Instead of going on those volunteer trips people should just donate some money to trustworthy local grassroots, which might be not so easy to find, but that would be more helpful.
With that money professional local staff, staying longer than the few weeks the usual volunteer does, could be employed, thereby also creating jobs locally.
But of course people might not really want to help sustainably, they do it mostly for the experience, for checking some box in their CV, for some selfish feelgood kumbaya, "Look, I´m a good person, I helped some poor ophans by volunteering."

Sadly, I think that's a lot of it. They want credit for having done it (an interesting story to tell) more than they want to actually be of use to others. Do-gooder egoism. Just as ugly as Wall St. egoism, only more self-righteous.

I could not see myself doing this as the point of volunteering is to give and not to receive in return. It is similar to the charity issue that happens with donations as they are diluted among administrative expenses and the benefactors in need only receive a small portion of the donations received. Blockchain could be a great advance in following the donations and where they are spent.

It is truly a big part of my hope for blockchain. It is already happening, but I hope to see bigger initiatives. Fundition is a good start. I find it a little confusing in layout for people to work with, but at least the tool is there. And STEEM is a great currency for cross-border micro-payments. I may reach out to the Fundition team and see what can be done to increase their reach some (and make the site more intuitive).

I could have done it a long time ago but the enormous fees makes one wonder where is the money going to and how it is utilised. Also, a red cross volunteer friend of a friend did confirm that they travel 1st class.
Entirely different but they do paint a picture where something isn't right.

Wow! I'm actually surprised to hear the 1st class thing, but I shouldn't be. The Red Cross received half a billion to help Haiti after their earthquake yet only a handful of permanent homes were ever provided to anyone!

And red cross is usually the first in line when there's a calamity..generally.
Although another friend of a friend knew someone in a grass root level that says red cross philippines delivers. Red cross UK I dont trust.

How sad, that people who are supposedly helping to fight the poor, do a business of that situation. leaving the inhabitants and people who really need help, orphans of this.
