Goal Setting the S.M.A.R.T. way

in #life7 years ago

Recently I had a conversation with @dreemsteem about our goals in Steemit and I saw that many people don’t have a framework in order to set their goals and express them in a way that will help them achieve it.

So, I dig into my NLP notes and found this blueprint and I am presenting to you.

It’s in an acronym form so that you can remember it.

Let’s see what makes a goal S.M.A.R.T.

SPECIFIC

The goal has to be precise , expressed in a positive way without words that are related to negative ideas or comparisons.

Refrain from phrases like “don’t do X”, “lose X”, “stop X” since our brain can’t understand the negative and will make a mental picture of what you don’t want first. For example if I tell you “don’t think of a rose elephant” , you will first think of a rose elephant and then think of the “don’t”.

Refrain from comparisons. “Better than last year”. It’s not specific. “Want to make at least X” it’s better to phrase it “want to make X and more” because in the first case you put a glass ceiling.

Be careful with your words. Words matter.

MEASURABLE

This has to do with me. It’s what I do , what I think , what do I need to move forward. I take into consideration only things that I can influence.

For example not “get a job” because I cannot 100% influence the interview, but “I apply to X positions in a certain sector and acquire Y qualifications/certifications”.

AS IF NOW

I express my goal in present time, because future tenses create distance and thus difficulty in achieving the goal. For example “By next month I blog 3 times per week in Steemit”.

I also must have certain criteria so that I realize that I have achieved the goal. We call that convince and reassurance strategies and could be the subject of another article.

REALISTIC

This is where most goals fail. For a goal to be achievable we have to check with ourselves and our environment. What will happen if I achieve the goal? What will I gain or lose? What could go wrong if I achieve or don’t achieve the goal?

In NLP we call that the ecology of the individual. For example, let’s say that someone wants to lose weight. Expresses the goal in the right way as I described, but fails to see that maybe all his friends are of the same caliber and he will lose them if he changes lifestyle. Guess how possible is that person to achieve the goal.

A realistic goal means that it has to be in accordance with the person’s values, goals and environment.

TOWARDS A HIGHER PURPOSE

Why am I doing this? Why this is important to me? What will I be able to achieve and what will change for me. It’s all about your why. If you know why you do what you do, it is easier to achieve, because the “right” why is the best motivator that there is.

Now let me copy/paste my blogging goals from @dreemsteem ‘s post :

Here’s my goals :
By the end of April , my “important project” is on the air
By the end of summer , I am producing at least one piece of content in written and video >and audio form every week.
By the end of the year, I make more than 1000 euros from my blogging activities.

What is missing is the last part. The “Towards a Higher Purpose” which is “I want to become financially secure, so that I can help other people do the same”.

And for the end an exercise that can help you. Let’s say you achieved your goal. Imagine the image of yourself 15 minutes after you did it. Turn around and face now. What was the previous step just before you did it. And the one before that and you continue until you reach now. This exercise will help you see the steps you have to make to realize the goal. Of course, we have a name for that. It’s called Timeline, thanks for asking.

Hope you’ve found this post useful, but don’t upvote it yet.

Write your goals in the S.M.A.R.T. way and share them here. Could be anything: job, health , Steemit. Share your goals and we will hold you accountable.

Now you can upvote the post. Thank you. :)

And until we make our goals…
Be Healthy, Smile and Steem.

Nice one brother! This post as well as @artemislives goal setting in the group have really inspired me to reset my own!

I don’t have it figured out yet, however I am working on it and once I post them, for accountability of course. I will link back to this SMART post, thanks man! 👍

If you want feedback or help to refine them, let me know.

Thanks man. My first goals are getting the tools of my task in order. Suppose I could smart that too, however the bigger picture TOWARD A HIGHER PURPOSE. That’s first for me and I work backwards how I will achieve it, similar like you said with you nlp visualization. 👍

Great. You can find your higher purpose by asking questions like "why is this important to me?" until you find a core value. We call that Hierarchy of Ideas.

it's a blogging platform. Stop treating it as a business, have fun and socialize. XD

First of all, I am definitely sure that I have NOT written that these are my Steemit goals.
They are not. Maybe I should have made it more clear.

Second of all , I wonder what you would do if someone would have told what to do.

Last of all, peace and fun. :)

I guess I would troll them, like I do with you now :D

I came with the mindset of making fast money on steemit. Started and realized it wasn't what was sold to me. I am now rebranded and committed to making quality comments as this so as to connect with people and possibly increase my rep.

The money and any other incentive would be an added advantage. So my SMART goals are to write a minimum of 100 quality comments each (I read every post before commenting) and for the record I set the bar so high so that if I couldn't reach 100, I can atleast have some meaningful comments to show in a day.

Thank you. You are on the right track.
And let me give you a pro tip. Don't vote your own comments right away.
Wait for a couple of days so that we won't notice it. :)

Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate.

I like the structure of this, Ilias. It's not new to me but it's helpful to rethink it in the context of steem. I DO appreciate my steem world having some goals and structure and even set a steemit gameplan for myself a couple of days ago. Gratitude for sharing.

Thank you @artemislives . Having a game plan helps you be disciplined and persistent.

I remember SMART back from nursing school. It does help making your ideas more concrete and chopped into managable pieces.

Shouls be perfect if you want to take your steemgame to the next level

Exactly , it's the good ol' SMART model , with an NLP twist.

INCREDIBLE, I had time without seeing an article that called me so much attention, @iliasdiamantis I do not regret having followed you. your posts are very good but this i fantastic!

thank you . I am blushing . :)

Hi friend!!! :) I'm glad that you did this!!! I'm going to tag my friend @calumam in it (and resteem this) because I love how you outlined it!!!

I've been doing that Timeline process for a long time!!! I never knew it had a name ! hahaha I just called it "going backwards from a goal, and then planning it forward"

Timeline is much easier to say! :)

how is your trip going back home???? I think you have another post up and I'll look to see if you have some pictures for me to see!

Today is the Orthodox Easter and as you will see we ate a shitload of food.
Not that we hadn't eaten a lot the previous days ... :)
I am posting and on other social media . You can check them out ... :)

i did see some - and upvoted of course ;) i didn't get onto Sola - i dont' think.... i'm running out of AP points because i don't check in enough and i haven't posted hahahahaha

i just have so much to catch up on Steemit!!! LOL

Just go once a day on Sola to collect your APs.

You will catch up . Don't worry.

Health is more important than stupid social media. :)

agree hehehehe

(but yes - its the simplest way to just get some APs!!! just log in!! i will try to remember hehehe)

I like what you do. The tips are very useful. I even try to apply them. At the moment, for me, there are two important things. Comments and good content. Sometimes, not everything is as smooth as I would like, but I try.

The key is consistency. It won't be great every day but you have to show up.
Someone said that 90% of success is to show up.
Keep on Steeming and you will achieve your goals. :)

As far as I understand, persistently and systematically carry out their work! At any cost, go ahead!
