Day 3: Our Canine Mentality
When I recently reflected on the situation in my country something called my attention, the coexistence of two different worlds in the same territory. I am not talking here about political parties, but of an exuberant nature full of life and with abundant resources, vegetation and animal life devoid of worries, sharing space with man and his imperfect and highly corrupted system.

What I found curious is that the wildlife does not perceive any crisis (leaving aside other problems such as pollution or the danger of extinction of some species), the vegetation is still green and the birds sing every morning. Inflation, corruption, poverty and crime have no effect on them.

The only exception to this phenomenon is observed in some domestic animals, which have developed a dependence on the human being. Take the dogs as an example. Commonly known as man's best friend, they are the product of breeding processes with the sole purpose of obtaining creatures that adapt to our needs, and thus ended up being dependent on us.
The only problem with this dependence is that when a country is in crisis, man's best friend will be affected. The high cost of living causes many pets to be abandoned, the hunger that reigns in the nation leaves stray dogs without the food leftovers that were once their sustenance. The result is hundreds of malnourished dogs in the streets. I think that friendship with men (learned dependence indeed) isn't a good deal after all.

And while our four-legged friends who have placed their trust in us are starving because of our political and economic crisis, other species come out every day to find the food that is and has always been available out there for them. It's a paradox ... Right? To be honest it wasn’t my plan to spend so much time talking about the poor dogs in my country, I really wanted to talk about us. There is something in the situation of these animals that I just described that reminds me of a problem of us.
Just as we have accustomed these creatures to depend on other beings and not to fend for themselves while other species enjoy total independence and well-being, we have done that with many of us. A large portion of humanity has become accustomed to depend on others to solve their problems, be they governments, leaders and ... Whales.
