Day 2: The Green Remains

in #life6 years ago (edited)
Yesterday I mentioned that I like to walk because it allows me to have a greater awareness of the thoughts that flow in my mind. I would say that it also helps ideas to flow better, thoughts that I would never have considered otherwise. In a recent walk the green color of the vegetation caught my attention. The green leaves of the trees radiated life and I couldn’t help to think about the state of human societies, and particularly that of my nation.

Venezuela is currently going through one of the worst crises in its history, characterized by growing poverty, economic instability, high levels of crime, a broken justice system, an alarming corruption that is not limited to the authorities but has extended to all levels of society, scarcity of some food items and medicines, to name the most outstanding problems. However, the green remains intact. The green grass, the green foliage of the trees. And close to the stunning green, all kinds of wild life remain without noticing the severe crisis that the most developed organisms are currently facing.

Many animal species get their food in the same way they have for centuries, birds still sing every morning, ants keep walking in a row and doing an arduous job. The trees continue to bear fruit and the flowers have not lost their beauty. This reminded me of the passage in the Bible that talks about the worries of men:

Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
(Matthew 6:26-29)

Everything that maintains a certain degree of independence of men still stands. Ironically, the only animals that are having a hard time here are those species that have developed dependence on human beings, those we call "domestic", those that we took from their natural habitats since ancient times to subject them to breeding and reproduction processes with the only purpose to obtain creatures that could adapt to our needs, and therefore dependent.

What a contradiction, that two very different worlds coexist in the same territory. An exuberant nature full of life and abundant resources, vegetation and animal life devoid of worries, sharing space with a chaotic and decadent system where for many the only solution is to join the mass exodus in search of other lands. Other lands with the same radiant green, the same ants walking in rows and the song of similar birds, in short with the same capacity to house life. The problem in Venezuela and in the entire world is us, human beings. Meanwhile I still see a spectacular green in my nation.
