Zipline park death in Chiang Mai

in #life5 years ago

This actually happened back in April but I hadn't thought about it until it was brought up last night at my local pub. Now, I don't think that it should be so unusual for an injury at a park where you are intentionally taken hundreds of feet off the ground and then "whoooshed" through the sky on a steel cable, I think the danger factor is kind of implied. However, this one was because of pure neglect on the part of safety staff and greed on the part of the park owners.

I have been to a few zipline parks in this country and they are a lot of fun. Of course the danger is implied but a lot of the safety is kind of up to you once you are there. The park I went to didn't even have any safety officials once you were off the ground and you had to just be very careful. The feeling of danger is part of what makes these sorts of things so exhilarating.

So what was the problem that lead to this Canadian tourist to fall 100 meters to his death? It's simple: He was too heavy and should not have been allowed to go on it in the first place. At 125kg (275 lbs) I think it is foolish on his own part to put himself in that situation, and absurd for the staff to allow it. While the cables are rated to 120kg you need to understand that this is Thailand (TIT) and safety, for the most part, is something that isn't generally inspected in any sort of realistic fashion. If there is some sort of licensing board that was actually involved in certifying the tensile strength of the lines, you can be assured that the application process could be "streamline" with an envelope of cash (every certification my businesses had could be... why not this one?)

The entire line snapped when this very big gentleman got on it and the park in question has been shut down ever since. Now, I am not trying to blame the victim here because ultimately I can imagine that he was likely assured by the staff that it was "fine." However, this guy knows he is really big so honestly, there has to be some level of personal responsibility taken on in life. If you are an enormous human being.... just maybe you shouldn't get involved with things that are dangle you high above the ground. Just a thought.

The park is closed indefinitely until "an investigation can be completed." I think there should be an investigation into the government inspector who classified the lines as "safe" when the park passed its inspection in March of this year.

I have intentionally not named the park of the victim because it is not my intention to shame anyone here

Sort:

That was really very unfortunate and unnecessary! They should have been more strict about safety measures!

Ouch! I think that‘s called the laws of gravity.

All kidding aside, I don‘t mean to be harsh here but I read a book, lately, that talked about our soul reincarnating in a new body and ( thus ) environment again and again and then learning the life lessons that followed this.

This tourist sure learnt the deadly risks of being obese.
