Frequent Highway Miles

in #life7 years ago

For my work, I drive quite a bit. I'm sure there are others who far outdo what I might in a week or a month, but since I spent the the better part of the last 21 years working out of my home or an office about five minutes from my house, it's the most I've done in quite a while.

When I first was assigned the van I use to get around my work area, I took it in for an oil change. That was around the middle of June. About two weeks ago, I took it in for another oil change, so, early October, and by then, I had put on over 9,000 miles (I was 3,000 miles late for the appointment). Basically 3.5 months, or over 2,500 miles a month. In a year, at this pace, I'll add another 30,000 miles to the vehicle.

Driving that much allows me to come across things I probably would miss otherwise. Most of the time, there isn't a whole lot going on, or I don't have time to safely fish my phone out of my pocket to take a picture, but here and there, I manage to get one.

This first one isn't something you see everyday—a helicopter being towed down the freeway with its rotor and propeller blades removed. A fairly light flying machine, which also means there's not much between you and the ground.

I end up following or passing quite a few recreational vehicles in my travels, especially coming to or from the coast, or along the coastal highway, where this image was taken. This RV was smaller and didn't really stand out in any major fashion, other than the make or model of it. Since I am a STEEM dolphin, I admit, it held some significance for me.

Interestingly enough, this was not at a wrecking yard, but obviously someone has an affinity for the character Mater from the Cars movies. There's quite a bit of detail put into it, and one of these days I'll have to stop and take a closer look.

On more than one occasion, in our neck of the woods, we'll come across an official transport vehicle of the Oregon Ducks, in particular a large bus or truck and trailer. I'm not entirely sure if this one was actually affiliated with the team or not, but I appreciated the message. For the uninitiated, Keep On Truckin' is a term that I believe came out of the 1970s as a rallying cry from truck drivers, particularly long haulers. Keep On Duckin' is a play on words, and basically means, keep rooting for the Oregon Ducks.

There's been quite a bit more on the roads as I travel about, but I do want to be safe as I drive, and so really need to get some kind of mounted camera rig going. That way I can record them for me and share them with you.

No matter what way you cut it, that's a lot of miles. It's nice that those miles were put on a company truck and not your own vehicle!

Hey, @thebigsweed.

Yeah. It's definitely a worthy 'perk', although I couldn't get everything I needed into my car anyway. I'd need something along the lines of a van or SUV to seriously make the switch, but I think they would pay gas and miles if I did. Still, since they have the van for company use, there's not much of an incentive to drive something of my own instead.

I thought it was a lot of miles myself, since 1,000 miles seems to be the standard or 12,000 a year, when they go looking at used cars and the mileage on them. I think the van is from 2012, so it has a solid seven years of work on it so far.

Great photos but you're right. You should be focusing on the road, instead. 😂

Hey, @trincowski.

Yeah. For the most part, that's what's been happening, thus fewer photos to share. :) If I can get my phone mounted on the dash properly, maybe that will help. I don't know. Or I could just give up on the whole idea. :)
