The final experiment - Chapter 4 - Fiction

There were hardly any trees left and the strong winds destroyed most of the lands. It was difficult enough to farm after the great drought, but now it was inevitable. The farmers stopped farming and started to focus on the water industry. They explored the world to find all-natural springs and build underground tunnels and caves to store the water.

Selling water became a new income. Swimming pools became obsolete and most pools were turned into tanks to store water. The farmers were the sole providers of water.

It was a horrific time and many more people died because of the high cost of living. They couldn't afford the basics and the main essentials to sustain life became unaffordable.

The government went against all humanity and started to rent out oxygen masks and tanks.  It nearly caused a civil war.  People could not stand up against the government and many just lost hope.  Many people could not afford to live anymore.  People were devastated and it was a time of great depression. Hundreds of people committed suicide and it was an end to a terrible era.

Eco-friendly humans and the Aayala started to work together to build greenhouses to populate with trees. The Aayala focused on the conservation of earth but most humans were still chasing money. It took nearly fifteen years for the oxygen levels to restore partly and it was only now in the last year that people could go outside for a limited period with oxygen masks.  Filter masks were still compulsory.

Oxygen was being pumped through underground tunnels and provided just sufficient oxygen for a certain period per day. The major issue was still cleaning the air because of all the sandstorms and little vegetation, and everyone was forced to wear masks, protective glasses, and clothing outside.

Air conditioners became a commodity and every household had at least one. Solar energy was the only form of energy to be used and thousands of solar panels were erected everywhere to supply everyone with electricity.

Cutting down any tree was a criminal offense and could land you in jail for years, while pollution in any form could result in nothing less but the death penalty.

Lila noticed that her car battery light was flickering.

“Dammit!” She was in such a hurry to get back to the office this afternoon that she forgot to charge her car battery. She had no choice but to stay over at Jack’s place tonight. It would take at least eight hours to charge her battery, otherwise, she would be stranded on her way home.

She made it in a nick of time and plugged in her cable to the charger outside the motorhome.

“I thought you weren’t coming. You bloody well took your time Lila.”

Lila smiled. Jack always sounded so arrogant and rude, but underneath all of that, he was just a big old teddy bear. She knew he was just anxious to see her.

“Do you mind if I sleepover? I forgot to charge the damn car battery.”
