The Philosophy of Bruce Lee .....“Using no way as a way, having no limitation as limitation"

Bruce Lee
The man, the myth .... The legend

I remember nostalgically the first time I encountered Bruce Lee. I was 8 or maybe 9 years old and my Mum allowed me to stay up late and watch Enter The Dragon on TV (thanks Mum)

For me it was a profound experience, I was mesmerised by the power and presence of this martial arts master, flickering across the screen as fast as lightning, with grace and athleticism I'd never seen before. A violent ballet both brutal and beautiful at the same time, from that day on I was a huge admirer.

Like many Bruce Lee devotees it didn't take long for me to realise that there was so much more to him than mere physical prowess and mastery of technique. He had a very deep philosophical approach to life and martial arts, an approach I believe is as relevant today as it was during his lifetime ... in fact I think its timeless and can be applied to every system of life, Politics, Religion, Philosophy, Education, Health ... to name but a few. A philosophy of formlessness. For those of you not familiar with Bruce's approach allow me to explain ....

Lee began training aged 16 in a type of Kung Fu known as Wing Chun. The classical martial arts are very rigid in form and technique, dogmatic in approach and so throughout his life Bruce started to become disillusioned with the impractical nature of traditional fighting styles. Eventually after the famous battle between himself and another martial arts teacher in which Lee felt he under performed he decided to formulate his own style of martial art, not sticking to rigid techniques that didn't work in a real situation but taking the very best bits of other fighting styles from western boxing to Chinese Wing Chun to the footwork of fencing and combining them in a formless and fluid style that can adapt to any situation. This style become known as Jeet Kune Do.

“Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it.”  ― Bruce Lee, Tao of Jeet Kune Do

This story can be used as a beautiful analogy for other belief systems.

Take politics for instance, once you devote yourself to a political ideology you then embrace a very rigid set of beliefs be it "socialism" "capitalism" "conservatism" .... Once you commit to an ideology you begin defending it and become less free and fluid in your thinking. You buy into the idea that your chosen ideology must be 100% correct on all issues, which is highly improbable , nobody can be right all the time. You attach status and ego to your beliefs and become imprisoned in many ways in your own mind. Unable to think freely. This to me is the most serious obstacle in the way of true human freedom.

“Set patterns, incapable of adaptability, of pliability, only offer a better cage. Truth is outside of all patterns.”  ― Bruce Lee, Tao of Jeet Kune Do

Religion is probably the greatest example of rigid dogmatic belief. Many say the etymology of religion lies with the Latin word religare, which means “to tie, to bind.” Being bound to a rigid set of unquestioned ideas is an important way of controlling people and has been responsible for immeasurable human suffering in history.

So lets learn an important lesson from this extraordinary man, and apply it to all aspects of our own lives, go into situations open minded yet skeptical, trust your own set of values and intuition to make the correct decisions and not rely on preconceived ways of interpreting things given to us by untrustworthy leaders. Build up your own fighting techniques of knowledge, rationality, resolve, logic, reason and wisdom. These are weapons you will always be able to enter into lifes battles with and remain fluid and unrestricted. But lets not give a name to this technique because as Bruce lee learnt when he came to name his martial art, naming something gives it a form and in turn it becomes itself a system of belief.

“If you follow the classical pattern, you are understanding the routine, the tradition, the shadow -- you are not understanding yourself.”  ― Bruce Lee, Tao of Jeet Kune Do

 Jeet kune do

Jeet kune do was founded by bruce lee

Because he felt

The martial arts were too confident

You can’t fight in pattern he used to say

Because an attack

Can be baffling and not refined

Jeet kune do was created by bruce lee

To show us

That an old art must transform

Like the day turns to night and

Night to day

The way of fighting must also reform

Bruce lee developed jeet kune do

But wished  He didn’t have a name for it!!

Because the very words, jeet kune do

Already indicate

That it’s another martial arts form

Any form or style does restrict

And his belief is now in conflict

The Legend

A term used too often these days but in Bruce Lees case it couldnt be more true .... Thanks for the comment

Dug his philosophy. At the end of the day, I think he was more self-aware than most of us, and was willing to bear the responsibility for his personal development. Thanks for the reminder, Bruce Lee is always inspiring!

Thankyou for the comment , was nice to remind myself how great he was ..... appreciated :)

Excellent article about a true legend, I think you really captured his essence. Enter The Dragon still ranks as one of my all time favorite films! It's crazy to think that in his last film (which he died while filming) he plays an actor whom whilst filming a shooting scene has the blank bullet replaced with a real one and nearly dies (ending up faking his death) which is exactly how his son Brandon died. Both never living to see the success of their biggest films, Enter The Dragon & The Crow.

I love the clip where Bruce Lee says the quote that you have mentioned, "be water". He looks so awesome when he says it.

He does ..... Hendrix, Lee , Muhammad Ali .... these guys seem they like are from another planet they are so awesome :)

i'll beat him back one day. :)

Thank you for your information

.... And thank you for your comment.

Great post. Bruce Lee is one of those people who come around once in a lifetime. Like one Elvis, one MJ and One BRUCE LEE. I love the Yin Yang symbol the circle with two interlocking teardrop shapes but he added added two arrows around the Yin Yang to represent the continuous interplay of the two parts and a Chinese phrase around the arrows that says “Using no way as way. He was cut from a different clothe. 🌞

I agree absolutely ... i often think Lees philosophy is neither yin nor yang but the fine line inbetween , the wiggly line can easily be thought of as the serpent or the dragon or maybe water .... a different cloth indeed

Well said @ gamma-rat

He was so ahead of his time wasn't he?
My husband did martial arts for 30 years so I have seen all of Bruce Lee's movies and have some autographed pictures, because his uncle was at that International Karate Championships event in Long beach CA.

“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.” - Bruce Lee

Wow thats fantastic , Im jealous .... I believe Bruce is buried in Seattle is that correct, Ive never been to the states but would love to go on a pilgrimage one day .... so many cool people on Steemit from Florida must be a hotspot!

HAHA Yes We lived in North Jersey, NYC for a while but now in FL. He is in Seattle, I believe they killed Brandon Lee on purpose.

Of course , are you aware of the Dionysian cult of ancient times, theres too many coincidences in the deaths of these famous people for there not to be a more plausible explanation . As Sherlock Holmes said "It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" .... well to me the truth appears to be that certain stars are literally bred from an early age for ritual sacrifice , theres just too many strange coincidences , too many glitches in the matrix for there not to be an underlying story. I might elaborate in future posts if they don't get to me first lol ;)

Of course I am! I am part Greek haha an I agree with you! I never thought if it like that. I think they are def. bred into that lifestyle and sell their soul. Bob Dylan and many other have admitted to it. All the dances Madonna and Beyoncé to for Shiva, Trust me I know what you mean. :)

Your very clued up (is that a phrase in US?)! Beyonce has an alter ego , Madonna sang "material world" thats the principal of satanism, inversion , putting material before spirit , its a subtle attack on human energy that means we co-create reality against nature and natural law, hence the desent into chaos .... but we are fighting back and its great to talk to like minded folks, spiritual warriors who know we are in a battle :) Half Greek , explains the Aphrodite looks :)

have you read my post on Gamma Rats lol ... its relevant . https://steemit.com/introduceyourself/@gamma-rat/introduction-better-late-than-never

I have always been inspired by Bruce! Great post.

Me too , Thank you

Wise words for any area in life, thanks for sharing.

I've been a huge fan of Bruce Lee since I was a kid. This dude was THE guy back then. I have some of his books, he's been an inspiration for me not only from the martial arts view, but the philosophical as well. A testament of how passion can lead you to great heights in whatever you do, not just Kung Fu.

Was fun at school we used to tease eachother. Some friends were taking Karate lessons, and we were telling them to "Get outta here, we'll kick your asses with Bruce Lee's Kung Fu moves" lol

Theres a small hand fall of human beings that are universally adored, Bruce is part of that little group probably somewhere now deciding with Ali who really is the greatest while Hendrix plays them a tune!
