I attended a deeply meditative yin yoga class this evening. Yin yoga is considered to be particularly beneficial for driven, alpha types and focusses on slow, simple poses for increased flexibility and decreased mental chatter.

The poses which are mostly seated or lying down are given English names and typically held for a period of 5 minutes, so that the connective tissue and fascia can be accessed. This evening we focused on the butterfly and dragonfly poses.

Yin in the Taoist tradition denotes stillness and cooling in the body whereas the opposite is yang which refers to movement and heat in the body. Ashtanga and hot yoga are yang types of yoga practice and suit more chilled out types.

Yin yoga can be practised as an antidote to an active, busy life. It is a calming, balancing practice which will increase mobility in the body, especially the joints and hips and will lower stress and decrease the chattering mind.

Hello fleur! I also love a good Iyengar class for stress management. A lot of body/conscience work, very technical but if the teacher is right it's an amazing experience. So much knowledge goes into each asana.

Have you tried Indian Classical Dance? I've been practicing Odissi for 4 years with yoga also. It's the perfect mix for me :)
