The Imminent Resurgence of the "80's Horror Genre"

in #life6 years ago

It's been almost a week since the release of the brand new entry to the Halloween franchise aptly named... Halloween. And with a respectable 79% on the Rotten Tomatoes website, this seems likely to pave the way for a slew of 80's horror icons dusting off the cobwebs for yet more terrifying on-screen shenanigans once again. So, what's the latest juicy gossip in regards to this exciting upcoming cinematic prospect?

Are you a fan of the old Nightmare on Elm Street franchise? I've got a real soft spot for all of them. Albeit the later ones are more of a guilty pleasure if anything else. What a unique and visceral depiction of a genuinely unsettling character we had courtesy of the creationists behind these amazing films. One of the most famous movie brands in the 80's and 90's, **the one and only Robert Englund gave theatre goers more than a bad dream or two with his incredible performance as Freddy Kruger. Well, it seems he's not done yet as the man himself has gone on record to state that he might be bringing back the clawed fiend for one last time. Furthering this intriguing speculation, there's also talk of him passing the mantle onto "another". Though what that means and how it relates to the "Elm Street" universe as a whole still remains to be seen. I'll be watching closely to see how this pans out as we get more information.

One of the best horror movies of all time, from my personal point of view, is renowned Japanese classic The Grudge. The overall plot involves a young mother and son subject to a brutal murder by her husband in their town home. Whilst he committed suicide shortly after, the house now became the sanctuary of an evil curse. The spirits of the deceased dwelled within and whomever set foot in their home would be held at the mercy of their avenging wrath. Well, it appears a new USA reboot of the popular movies has been made and is currently being shown to test audiences. However, early test screenings are proving to be less than disconcerting as apparently it relies more on age old horror tropes like "jump scares" to try and garner it's scares. I guess we'll have to wait and see for ourselves when it gets released.

And finally, this may come as no surprise whatsoever. Hot on the heel of Halloween's success will come another reboot in the form of a brand new Friday the 13th movie. Details are very sketchy as of this time but all we know is that LeBron James' SpringHill Entertainment** and Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment are in talks to acquire the rights to the movie and set about producing it. And given the absolute gargantuan fan base that these films have, it looks like the beginnings of a new generation are about to be reintroduced to the horrific delights of Jason Voorhees. I simply cannot wait for this one.

All this, and a sequel to the newest Halloween, are all being primed for delivery to the masses. I must admit, I did love these old classics and would be interested to see how they fair nowadays. Of course, my expectations are extremely low at this point, however I still hold out hope for being pleasantly surprised in the long run. :)

I LOVE Nightmare on Elm Street. It was my favourite horror movie series growing up (I was allowed to watch the films them from an unsettlingly young age for some reason) They were so visually fun and striking, it didn't seem 'real'. Which I guess was the whole point.
Interesting the 80's feel might be on it's way back...good timing from my Bloodbath Chainsaw Lullaby video eh?!

Seems we got a lot in common, man! You should have been one of the directors on the new movies being produced! Keep the great work. :)
