Vlog #58: Communities are already here, they are just invisible.

in #life7 years ago

I was struck by this simple thought today.

When communities come to the Steem Blockchain it will be easier for new users to find a place where they feel at home much faster.

But even without this feature, it's clear that communities already exist on Steemit.

People are finding each other inside the blockchain through posts and replies fairly organically.

A prime example for me is my friend @eqko who is relatively new (6 weeks) to the platform but has already found his way to the (pixel) art community. I sure didn't tell him about this. I didn't even know that community existed. But it was there all along.

And he found it by just being active on the platform and finding his way exploring the blockchain. I think that's a beautiful thing.

From a business perspective, it's probably not the best way to draw in the masses. But I do think there is a certain charm to it.

It kinda reminds me of the time when video games made you figure out stuff for yourself instead of starting with 'Press A to jump".

It's important to point out that games are a lot more profitable now in that latter design. Although you'll be hard pressed to find people arguing that they are better.

I really think we'd be much better served with a site organization more like Reddit. We need that sub-reddit style organization. The fatigue of "finding your way through the blockchain" to get to good content or your own type of community is honestly very large. Along the way, you bump heads with a lot of wackjobs who are circle-jerking each other about how the earth is actually flat, or spamming nonsensical word-vomit posts.

I'm new here as well, but I'm hoping that "Beta" under the top logo won't change to "Release" (or, actually just go away) until we have something like groups/communities/sub-Reddits.

Communities are planned for this year. And they can be monetized! I think that fact plus easy sign ups (HF20) will be great for the platform.

Hi exyle I think it's pretty hard to find your way in the steemit community as a new member. I'm a member now for about 2 weeks and I finally start to find my way. My first impression was not that positive because nobody was reading my posts. I was really disappointed, not because my posts didn't generate cash, but because I had only 10 views for an article I spent 3 hours on. But now my experience is much better as I start making some friends. Well friends is still a big word but I notice that I start communicating more often with the same people. So I think this is a good start. Also I think its harder to find your way on steemit if your mother language is not English. While I consider my English is not that bad I'm more fluently in my native language which is the same as yours. Well sort of... I'm Belgian. I think you are doing great with these vlogs... I don't have the balls to do it... yet. Keep them comming and enjoy your green egg this afternoon. peace!

Hey! I can totally relate. I have become active for only a week or so, but still no one. And I also don't really have an idea how to do it yet. Are you from the Flemish part? I'm from Limburg. Greets!

Awesome, guys! :) I have followed you both. Is that the same as being friends here? I'm still pretty new to the whole steemit gedoe. :') ;)

Ok everyone - just like @exyle stated - communities are here and although it might be challenging - people find these communities. There is one right here - the Dutch community. I also live in NL although I am not dutch. I will follow you all. Some language regions such as China, Germany, Korea etc. have their own tag - there is not a dutch one as yet however. It is nice to have the option of a community while still having access to everyone else.

I have been daunted by the lack of viewers so I have take a break from blogging while looking around to figure out how to proceed although I have been here since the middle of May. There are many posts providing guidance and tips on how to be successful. I will persevere as I do like this platform. All the best.

Hi @elvya, yes I'm from the flemish part. Actually I'm pretty close to Limburg. I'm from Mol but I live in Geel now. grtz

I am from Holland!! Let's be friends :) see my relatable comment below.

So I made an account like a month ago, but I am really starting to use Steem since a couple of days. I am having the same problem: It took me a long time to make a blog post but now noone seems to read it... I understand from your reply, that it is important to make friends here..

So would you be my friend? :D
Where are you from?

I allready liked your comment which gave you a little bit of dollars! and following you.

This is the article I was talking about: :) https://steemit.com/health/@steamitbeta/cold-showers-are-good-for-your-health It is an article about the positive effects of cold showers. It got 5 views...

I can relate too. It's hard at first when you come here. But I think you should focus more on ''Networking'' here and making friends than just writing ''2 hours long'' posts.

Keep grinding and putting effort into the platform.
You can clearly see just from all the effort you put into this comment you have managed to accumulate $2.39
I joined about 1 month ago and I've been tirelessly working on the platform: commenting and posting and it is all slowly starting to add up.
Growing on steem isn't easy but you are lucky you got in now rather than 1 or 2 years later when steem will be really saturated.
Start off by going over to great people like @exyle who are genuinely nice people and if you make a good, meaningful comment they will tend to check out your profile to reward you for being such a great follower.
I wish you the best of luck @cryptokas

well time will say how it turns out to be in future when billions of users will start using steemit, but it's difficult at first and it gets easier when you get adapt to it.

Fantastic comment. Thanks for sharing your experience. I was happy to read you are slowly finding your place on this platform. It does take time and effort (I guess similar to the real world) to find your way around here. Communicating with others helps a lot. I think your English is perfect.

Yeah, there are a lot of communities here on Steemit that we're not even aware of. In marketing, they're also called ''Niches'' and them niches are plenty of them here haha :)

I do think that communities have/are forming organically on Steemit. For example, it's quite easy to find topics you're interested in by clicking the tabs on the right and looking at the post in that topic which is of interest to you, but it can also be quite daunting when you're new to the platform. It does take work to start to find your niche and I know that is something some new users will not want to commit to, but I also know as time passes, the experience will get more user friendly as developers come up with new apps and the Steemit experience as a whole changes.

I'm very interested to see how the BTC responds going forward post August 1st. We've already had quite a rally so far and I think the big money is still on the sidelines right now. Have a great weekend!

You have a great weekend too! And thanks for all the awesome replies you always give. I'm also very interested in what will happen to BTC from now till Aug 1st and beyond.

I think it's best if we find ways to assist people to find communities. While it's organic to eventually find them, it's somewhat hard to find them initially.

Welcome to Steemit. Press "A" to access the blockchain.

"Let's make your first post, now press the submit a story button"

It's true it's just like a game, you even get achievements! I'm really enjoying myself here. so I really hope the community as a whole keeps expanding so we get more and more content.

yeah a truth and nothing but a truth post. Your friend remind me of myself. Even I, I found and learned everything just by reading/exploring by myself. Didnt ask/bother anyone. Great post. 🙂

Nice, from beer to movies and now at smart videos :))) Awesome :D

Yes, Steemit is doing really great things for individuals and communities altogether. I am proud to be part of this community and as usual a fan of your vlogs @exyle. Wish you the success.

Finding communities on Steemit may be hard for some, but if you're on discord there are far too many Steemit-related communities willing to help out minnows like me and @eqko

Steemspeak is a great place.
