Today I bought 1580 STEEM for my mom and her husband.
It's not that hard to convert euros to Bitcoin in the Netherlands and once you have Bitcoin it's even easier to get STEEM.
I don't use exchanges even though the rate is a little bit better. I choose convenience and speed over getting a little bit more STEEM for your euro.
My route:
bitonic.nl (convert euro to BTC) ---> Exodus Wallet ---> Blocktrades.us --> STEEM wallet.
It's not the first time my mom bought crypto. The previous time, 4-5 weeks ago, she bought a whole BTC that is now worth about $1500 more + 1 Bitcoin Cash ($600). That was cool!
Of course, none of it is 'real' profit until she takes it. But it's fun none the less. (she wants to keep it for at least +10 years)
My mom is a content creator on Steemit ( @clio) so it makes sense for her to invest in STEEM too as a person looking to expand her portfolio. It will give her more influence on the platform and she will benefit from a price rise.
But Exyle? what if the price goes down...
That doesn't matter if it's an investment for years. Buying STEEM is not a get rich quick scheme. If that is what you want you should speculate on a exchange with leverage! That's a great way to get rich fast. (I'm being sarcastic...please don't do this)
The price of anything goes up when the demand is bigger than supply. More people wanted Bitcoin...so the price went up.
I have been on Steemit from July 2016. It was just a blogging platform back then. In just over a year it has transformed from blogging to a complete social media platform (with it's on Youtube = Dtube now!) spread all over the globe and growing every day.
Yes, it's still a bit rough around the edges. But surely it must be easier to see now where this is going and what a potential it has compared to a year ago.
And if you can't see it yet, just wait another year. There is no rush here.
That's the whole point with early investing. You take a bigger risk because it's unclear what will happen but you get a bigger reward if you are right vs late investing, a smaller risk because it's more clear where it's going but you pay more for your investment.)
I believe more demand for the token will come. And all you have to do is wait.

Fantastic to hear how your mum wants to get invested into steem. Hopefully, this can lead to everyone advocating the blockchain and crypto as people already see the huge benefits of it.
I'm glad that bitcoin is on a general uptrend despite the few dips recently. I don't think that it will crash anytime soon and I believe we may be on a steady journey to $5000.
I don't know what fees are like with bitonic.nl but I've recently found this video where you can buy BTC with no fees on GDAX if you do a manual listing. Here is the video where I found this out.
I haven't tried it out yet, but it seems pretty promising. I don't use fiat much to buy crypto anymore, but if I do, I'll have a go with this method.
I guess you have bought steem relatively expensive (well definitely for you as you remember the days of 7 cent steem haha) but I guess in the end it will be worth it even if it dips. Steem does have a bright future, and I think many of us one day will say something along the lines of I remember $1 steem or $1.40 steem.
I guess the only way to become rich is to take risks. I don't think anything could go wrong with steem or bitcoin but there is a possibility that something bad happens and everything comes crashing down. The most important thing as I've said before is to only invest money which you are willing to lose.
If all does go wrong on steem, the only loss I will have is the money I spent myself. However, steemit has enabled to meet some amazing people (like yourself) that I would never have met in any other way and it more enjoyable spending time here rather than on a different social media platform or a forum.

There is always risk involved with investing. I made her aware that the money can be gone at any moment for reasons unknown. You have a great weekend too man!
I think it's awesome they wanted to invest and that you oversaw this for them. With your mom planning to hold for 10 plus years I truly feel she's approaching this with the right mindset and wish her nothing but success. Your guidance along the way will be invaluable as your knowledge in this space is excellent.
I understand completely why you prefer convenience and reliability over saving a few bucks by going the exchange route. I've done both and now I hold the same view point. I much prefer peace of mind versus any amount of risk at this point in my life. I'm not familiar with bitonic.nl, but I'll check it out. In the US I use coinbase and then blocktrades. The price and fees are higher than going through an exchange, but the peace of mind I feel outweighs the extra cost.
One thing about Dtube that I truly love is it's so much easier to introduce people to the Steem block chain. The response so far has been great and it's exciting to see people get excited about it. :) Have a great weekend brother and best wishes of success to your mom and her husband. In the long term, I believe Steem will be a great investment. I think development of communities for HF20 and new applications for the Steem blockchain like Dtube and Zappl (the Twitter like clone) are really what's going to drive demand for Steem.
The development is being driven by the fact that you can monetize the steem blockchain in my mind. It's fantastic to see. Can;t wait for Zappl.
I agree totally. There will be many ways to monetize the steem blockchain in the future. We're just seeing the start of it right now.
