Retracing your steps to move forward: The future in the past

History is usually set by the man who actually wins the battle.

I have really missed posting according to a daily schedule, but being able to impact in the lives of others even gives a greater joy than one can imagine, so whenever I can steal some free time for myself, I usually let my imagination run wild like an Alien.

The greatest gift a writer has is imagination, and most times writing becomes so natural that if you err, you require a third party to spot it for you as your head and eye auto corrects it for you.

Back to the topic, the greatest people in this world have something in common when they speak, they recognize that in other to be successful, you have to understand the link between the past, present and future.

Why the past is necessary

In the popular X men movie titled Days of future past, we realize that according to the movie, that past actions affect future outcomes and it becomes essential to set things right to have a good outcome.

The journey into the past is something which is essential in people's lives, the moments of the past sometimes have to be revisited to effect a decent future.

If man does not need memories as a reference point, why then do we have them in the first place?
There is a popular saying that "the difference between here and there is the 'T', which symbolizes time". That saying although, I must admit, it sounds weird, actually buttresses my point.

Before we continue, what is actually a memory? According to simplypsychology.org it is defined as "The term given to the structures and processes involved in the storage and subsequent retrieval of information."

It actually means there is a possibility that storage occurs as a form of reference in the future, that further means that there is credence on the need to constantly retrace one's steps when one feels stuck at a point.

The bridge to the days of future past

I must admit, I love that x-men movie and that is why I keep getting inspired by it each time I watch it to write a post on retracing one's steps in other to learn and succeed.
These are a few reasons why we should refer to the past so as to build a better future

- It prevents a recurrence of failure due to the same mistake: When we are aware of what made us fail in the first place, we can then decide how to tackle the failure. By referring to the past, we can successfully note and prevent such a thing from happening again.

- It helps form our minds: A mind that has experience is a mind that can lead. When we have a past experience of an occurence and we learn from it, there is a way our reasoning is shaped, which in turn affects the way we think and act.

- It frees us from the confines of our fears: Ususally the reason why some people do not become successful is because of fear, and the reason is because most people are scared of failing, but if they go back amd know what made them fall in the first place, they might save themselves the stress of failing again.

- From the above point, we can go further to state that it gives us renewed confidence: When you have the knowledge of what made you fail and how to prevent it, failure ceases to be an option.

- We learn about accepting things as they really are: When we can review the past, be it a mistake or not, we can ascertain, not only that, we can accept the flaws, learn and move on.

And I feel like I lost my way, what do I do

Retracing ones steps is not as easy as it sounds, but if we expect to live a life where certain repetitive errors can be prevented, then it becomes necessary to always retrace our steps and make amends.

As human beings, we sometimes commit errors which sometimes draw us back, but we have to realize that always burying them without reviewing and learning from why we made those mistakes in other to prevent them, is a mistake on our part.

Like the steps in the five stages of grief, we swiftly move past the initial denial stage and zoom into an accepting stage if we can revisit past errors and learn from them.

In my honest opinion, past experiences which are un-revised and dealt with, keep us trapped in a limbo like state, sometimes without us knowing and we go about being trapped, but having the assumption that we are free. We only discover that a part of us has been trapped when we review ourselves.

Remember, to move forward, sometimes we have to take a step back.

Thank you...wow

Wow....thank you for this @ehiboss. This is a reminder of a reflection of me some years back. I can relate a 100% to this. Never give in to fear.

Wow, you must have had quite the experience

Upvoted & RESTEEMED :]

History has always been written by the winning side, true. When talking about a persons history or losing your way , one needs to go back to their roots, how it was, what kind of morals and beliefs did people have back then, what did then live for, what was it that made them happy. If you weigh out everything you will realized how far we have come as humans, and at times how hard it is to be happy or see the future.

You are right, thanks for commenting

A man isn't a failure unless he never stood up, test or exams are not to break us but to promote us. Stay focus on the future, well done boss

Thank you my friend

Reading this post reminded me of a movie I watched while taking Lit418.
"Sankofa" Is the title of the movie. The movie pointed to the need to look back to the past and rediscover one's self.

The movie was quite emotional, so I didn't really focus on the lessons but reading this post now, it striked a deeper meaning.

Well- written.

You will make a very good lecturer.... lol

Lol, perhaps I will think of lecturing

Very true post. Like they say experience is the best teacher, but the issue is whether we learn what experience is trying to teach is. Do we learn from our mistakes or do we just shove them aside. Nice one

Imagination gave J.K Rowling (Harry Potter author) a networth of $1b. Even great movie directors have got crazy imaginations. In steemit here, authors with great imagination are rewarded daily. Good job

Thank you so much

You welcome

Without past we can't have no future , like we don't know how is the best for us if we don't know what is the worst for us!

wow, I like that, thank you

wonderful post @ehiboss !
