When I sit here thinking about what to write about Yarrow, first thing that comes to mind is what crazy looking fern like plant that grows everywhere.

Ok, are you ready for this? This is an amazing herb that has so many uses it is a mind bender.

Yarrow contains: a- and b- pinenes; acetate, borneol, caryophyllene, eugenol, farnesene, myrcene, salicylic acid, thujone, cineole, camphene, camphor, gamma terpinene, isoartemisia ketone, chamazulene, limonene, sabinene and tricyclene and esquiterpene lactones. Many of these are found in other plants individually, seems nature got smart and put the great ones all in one package.

The primary external functions of Yarrow are styptic, astringent, antiseptic, vulnerary, anti-inflammatory and possibly anesthetic. Treats eczema and other skin conditions when used topically.

If taken internally, Yarrow is diaphoretic, expectorant, carminative, hemostatic, astringent, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, analgesic, stimulant, and emmenagogue. It also makes a bitter that stimulates digestion and helps prevent gallstones.

Yarrow is also historically used as a woman's herb to help regulate and ease menstrual issues.

A partial list of the ailments it helps or cures:

  1. arthritis
  2. hormone regulation
  3. eczema
  4. bleeding both internally and externally
  5. viral infections
  6. gallstones
  7. menstruation
  8. digestion
  9. bile production
  10. closes wounds
  11. fever
  12. bacterial growth
  13. promotes skin healing
  14. cramps
  15. pain
  16. increases body temp, sweating
  17. anti-gas
  18. spasms
  19. energy
  20. mood

Again these are a few of the benefits of this herb. I add a small amount to my teas when I need that extra boost. The thujone is found in a few different plants but it is, in high doses, a hallucinogenic. This particular compound helps elevate mood and keeps the brain focused. Since this herb only has small amounts it is perfect for me to much a couple of leaves (chased by a strong sweet tea, it is a bitter) to help keep me focused while I'm out and about.

Again thanks for dropping in. Remember that this is not medical advice nor do I prescribe anything to anyone. This post is for educational purposes only. Your body is your temple, treat it well. Have a great garden!
