And Then Disaster Struck: This Was NOT the Day Off I Was Looking For!

in #life7 years ago

I was looking forward to taking a day off today.

Of course, that's a relative matter... it was going to be a day of cleaning the gutters for winter, working on tidying up the garage and things like that. Work, I suppose, but a day away from work work.

But Life Had Other Plans!

Instead, my peaceful morning was broken by an early urgent phone from the building manager where Mrs. Denmarkguy and I have our small art gallery.

There had been a flood!

We arrived in there to a lot of standing water... and our lovely space-- from which we derive a good bit of our livelihood-- basically a shambles.

By late afternoon, most of the water had been pumped out and we could assess the damage. Damaged paintings, ruined furniture, ruined carpets, fixtures that will have to be replaced.

For a more detailed account, I have posted to our gallery's Steemit if you'd like to read the full story

No matter what you may think, you're seldom prepared when disaster does strike.

Cleanup and Moving Forward

We're crossing our fingers that our insurance will help pay for the damage, but at the moment things are not looking too bright... our insurance is saying it's possible we won't get compensation because this was rainwater coming in from the outside flooded parking lot.

Even though we might be able to collect compensation from the city for an inadequately serviced storm drain in the city maintained parking lot, that may take months to process.

So we're going to clean up over the next few days and hope for the best. What's mostly frustrating is that we put a lot of work and "sweat equity" into that business, and a lot just got washed away...

Not asking for charity or handouts here, but if you have a few extra upvotes to spare... visit @reddragonfly and toss a few cents our way on any active posts... it all helps! As would a re-steem or two of the latest post on that account.

Mostly I'm just checking in to say I might not be posting a whole lot for a few days/weeks, as we get the mess sorted out. Hopefully we can re-open the store sooner, rather than later!

Meanwhile, hope everyone is doing well!

It is really very sad that all this happened but with good and kind people, some power always works from behind and it will be all good very soon.

Thanks-- I'd like to think we'll come out of this OK, in the end.

I'm sorry for hearing this, we're not as prepared as we would like to believe. I know that you and Mrs. Denmarkguy will get past this hurdle. I will check out your gallery page, and although my votes aren't worth much- I know that every bit counts!

Thanks @shello, we'll do the best we can... in the end we'll get past this, as well. We don't get to schedule our bumps in the road and this happened while we're in the middle of preparing for other events... but hey, we'll just have to take it in our stride!

Mhmm, now that's a great attitude. This flood coming out of left field won't hold you guys for long! I'm glad to see that you are putting your best foot forward, because when bad things happen people tend to focus more on negativity, and we don't need that!

Damn, and you deserved to have a free day, after so many hours work, I hope the damage is limited and work is still useful,... All the best with cleaning, and Yes I will do some upvotes

Thank you-- appreciate the kindness. We will be drying and cleaning things today, and then repairing damage on the weekend, and hopefully be able to open again by next week.

Wish you all the best

I am so sorry to hear about this bad fortune. I hope you get compensation!

Thank you @onetree-- at the moment it looks like we may not get any insurance money, but we are hopeful the city will provide some recompense for a poorly maintained drain being the cause of the problem.

Aw man sorry to hear that. Hope you get it all sorted as soon as

We're on the proverbial creek and we'll just keep paddling! Sorry, bad water metaphor... hopefully we'l get some sort of compensation, however it's impossible to replace one-of-a-kind artwork.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, mate.

Good luck with getting it sorted out !

Thanks-- in the end I'm sure we'll get back to normal. It's just losing 7-10 days of business income that's going to be tough.

I know that feeling - 3 days and lack of liquidity - causes problems here.
good luck.

So sorry to hear about your flood troubles. I hope you are able to recover soon.

Thanks-- with a bit of luck and a LOT of cleaning work, we may be back to normal opening hours by next week.

I hope it goes quickly. It's got to be hard to have your business shut down or slowed.

Sometimes, I wish life was physically a person who I can punch in the face when it throws suprises at you. Just for a momnentary satisfaction of course.

Yeah, I know what you mean... but hey, I guess there were no guarantees that life was going to be easy or smooth sailing.

Yeh no one did tell us that when we popped out 😂

Excellent post and loving to read it, thanks for sharing

Aha, and famine in some countries where pigs internally moderated only on sauce.
