The psychological consequences of money

in #life6 years ago

Upon reading an edifying paper titled "The psychological consequences of money" by Kathleen Vohs, it has been revealed by her work that money does change people psychologically. The paper reveals that money produces in people a sort of psychological isolation where there is a tendency for people to choose to develop a self sufficiency orientation. This self sufficiency orientation makes sense because it is the lack of feeling dependent that people seem to gain from being independently wealthy. The interesting thing though is people who develop the money oriented mindset typically do not want others to depend on them either. To be specific, the reminder of money relative to non-money reminder has an effect as well where people are less likely to seek help from others and less likely to be helpful to others.

Money changes social distance preferences?

The interesting insight from the paper is that money creates a sort of isolation where a participant primed with money is more likely to work alone, play alone, and distance themselves more physically from others. Is this a positive or negative impact? The paper calls it "social distance preferences". This is something I may investigate deeper as there are a lot of new and interesting concepts.

The truth is money is Just a piece of paper it's people who gives it worth really, as for the changes, the feeling that you have money alone can change even the way you talk

I personally think that money do not change people.
Rather they reveal their true self which was always there lurking.
The way our society works makes money equal power and opportunity.
If a person was always good in their heart, they will remain good even after becoming rich and vice versa.

I haven't read the book, though, so I will check it out.

Thanks for the read and writing about this topic !

Money always changes people, but what change don't? for bad or good any change in our lives consist in changes in our personality. We are dynamic persons, and with money like everything else, some people can handle it but the majority of the people can't and change for the worse

You are right, normally money changes the mind of a person as the article says they create a mentality of self-sufficiency or superior to others.
One can have a lot of money but humility and the essence of being human should not be lost by material things.
When we are born, we are born with nothing and when we die we take nothing. What is the use of being rich if you are going to live alone and isolated from others?

Money does creates social distance in people who had no money before. Although I am against this change. Money should not overcome moral values among humans.

Money really has power to impact on people and change them greatly.
there is even a saying: if you wanna to see real nature of a person, wait till he is rich.
But it can be described not only as money influence but also as a shift from one class of society to another.
Power has the same impact as money then.

but how can we take it? as human weakness? or just a law of life?

Money may change people but we have to remember that class shouldn’t delegate us in any way . Class is just for show, where does humanity come in ? I’ve seen many people change over money but to me , it matters who was there when I had nothing

Do you think class has an impact on caste? Do you think caste still exists or is it an obsolete concept? People can think of money as a way to escape the punishment of being born into the wrong caste. In that case yes money could make a huge difference if they obtain it but what kind of difference? Positive or negative?

I would think being born into the wrong caste puts an unusually high pressure on certain people culturally to pursue money.

Of course the caste still exists , when I got married 1.5 years ago , my parents wanted to look for someone that was from the same caste as us like t somehow separates us ?

Even someone from a lower caste wants to break out and make money . What about the untouchables ? What happens to them then ? Not their fault they were born into that caste

Perhaps this is one of the main benefits of capitalism. It may in fact be the only way out of the rigid caste system.

@dana-edwards, thank you for this post. After spending a year on steem I had the chance to analyse the consequences of money (on myself and on some people who shared their thoughts with me) and Steem would be a perfect place to conduct this kind of research.

I will try to find a way to get the research you mention above. Have you found it only or you bought the book ?

I spend a lot of time analyzing research papers.

Great @dana-edwards.
