Mating markets and the bidding contest for desirable traits (Preview)

in #life6 years ago (edited)

The concept of a market society which I discussed in another post is based on the idea that markets are essentially ubiquitous. If that happens to be true then biological market theory has credibility. Mating markets are an example of a biological market where the participants make bids to those they desire in search of a life partner. In plain language, each side in the bidding contest brings something to the table which could make them more desirable to a potential partner. What they bring to the table could be resources, it could be physical attractiveness, it could be social status. The concept of social ranking and status contests are deeply involved here.

Research into the topic of mating markets has found for example that different demographics enter the bidding war with certain advantages. For example the research has determined that men care more about physical appearance in terms of percentage of demographic (92% of men vs 84% of women believe attractive physical appearance is desirable/essential). This data might explain the behavior patterns of women if indeed it is true that physical appearance happens to be a desirable trait that men tend to look for in women. At the same time 97% of women believe having a steady income is a desirable trait compared to 74% of men. This means women care more about income than men care about looks according to the percentages in the Chapman University Study.
