Updating The Laws
I find it humorous when you come across laws that make no sense. These laws would have applied hundreds of years ago and have just never been updated. I think everyone should be using their common sense even though it could be breaking the law.
I was reading an article about inmates in California's prison system who are now legally allowed to have cannabis in their cells as long as they don't smoke it or sell it. The Law had up until this point only stated the use of drugs and not the possession was illegal. With California voting in favor of legalizing cannabis it has left loopholes for the inmates to jump through. This led me on to some other dumb laws that still exist.
Fish and Chip shops in the UK are by law not allowed to trade on Sundays. They are allowed to open as long as they don't sell fish and chips which is stupid. The Indian take away however is allowed to sell fish and chips. Obviously not everyone takes it too seriously as most people turn a blind eye to it these days, but you will still most likely find the Fish shop shut. Some say it is down to no fresh fish deliveries on a Sunday and that is hog wash as fish is fine for a few days in the fridge.
It goes back to when families actually meant something and Sunday was a special day. Most people went to church and would sit down as a family having a roast lunch. The Fish and Chip shop threatened that thought as it was the main take away in those days and was banned from trading.
At one stage only carrots were allowed to be traded on a Sunday. They were very expensive carrots as well as whatever you wanted in the shops was given a carrot value and you paid for the carrots and everything you purchased was given to you for free.Stupid law that thank fully is no longer around.

I am sure you have all have heard of "rule of thumb". This is nothing what you would think it would be either. If you wanted to beat your spouse it had to be with something less than the thickness of your thumb. So wife and husband beatings were allowed then which kind of misses the point and thankfully beatings are not legal anymore.
In 1965 a law commission was set up to change these outdated laws and recommending appropriate changes. I have no idea if it is still in existence and if they are they are bloody slow at doing their job.I personally think it should be down to common sense and it is as simple as that.
Very interesting post on dumb laws still in existence. While some of the crazy old laws could have sense back when they were created (like not selling food in a restaurant so families could eat together at home) - the one about the Rule of Thumb is just ludicrous. I did NOT know where that phrase came from, but I'll think about this every time I hear it from now on! And I got interested in looking up our own crazy laws - here are some from Chicago, IL

Why in the world would there ever be a law making it illegal to fish from the neck of a giraffe??
Because someone had tried to cross the parody horizon to combat laws like that - and failed.
Often have fish and chips on a Sunday here in the UK... Things might have changed since 😬

I read up that the authorities turn a blind eye to it today, but the law still stands which is kind of crazy.

The rule of thumb was rather useless as the thickness of a weapon is but one variable to determine how dangerous it is to use. Shape, density and length all count when you're trying to decide what to hit somebody with.
I fully agree with you on that.
Some laws are really stupid and I agree, laws need to be revised from time to time, otherwise you end up with these outdated laws that don't make sense anymore.
I've read an article once about a law in the US that said every restaurant is obliged to allow travellers to cook their meat in the kitchen. Obviously it was outdated.
