So mom’s what do you labor in? Do you wear the traditional hospital gowns? Do you go bare? What do you deem as comfortable? I want to share with you today some alternative options that I have fell in love with while giving birth and recovering.

I am currently preparing for labor. I have less than 4 weeks left to deliver our 5th baby so I will be doing a few posts surrounding this topic as the weeks close in.

Before Comfort Gown Awareness

This is a picture of me in labor with our first baby in 2010 breathing through the contractions. Being my first time, I was nervous and didn’t want to labor at home. Although I had studied, went through my doula classes it was still mysterious of what I was going to face during my labor. I decided to labor in the hospital the whole time close to my midwives for support and guidance.

This is what I was wearing when I first arrived...my pajama pants and my husband’s t-shirt. It was uncomfortable for me when the nurses had to keep pulling my shirt up to put the monitor around me (I only do intermittent monitoring instead of continuous so I can move around). During a contraction I don’t want to move nor do I want anyone touching me. All I want to do is concentrate on breathing and getting through each one without tensing up too much.

As labor progressed I changed into one of their hospital gowns and delivered in it. During my labor not only did I have my husband with me but I had a room full of women from my family. Both my moms, sisters and my best friend were all there with me. At some point I remember not caring who seen my body because I was so into labor and all of that modesty stuff went out the window. It was afterwards that I realized how uncomfortable I really was and how hard it was to stay discreet in that hospital gown.

When you get visitors in the hospital as a nursing mom it can get frustrating. We had soooo many guests come that my husband had to keep sending the men out when it was time for me to nurse. I had to keep untying the gown every time I needed to feed the baby. When the guests were in the room I didn’t even want to get up to go to the restroom because I knew my bottom would be all out in the open feeling a breeze of air as I was walking Lol! Even if you try to gather up the backside you still might have some skin revealed. There is just no privacy at all in those traditional hospital gowns.

My Recovery Gown

Then I met Gownies!! 💕 I started researching online to see if any other moms were feeling the same way I was about the traditional gowns. I was Amazed at all of the different styles and colors of these new modern and more comfortable labor gowns that were hitting the market. I had no idea these were even being made but I sure was excited about it.

In the picture above you can see the gownie unbuttoned right underneath the collar. This is easy access to breastfeed your baby. It is so easy to unsnap and snap up again which makes this gown very convenient. It covers you all the way up to your collar bone and you don’t have to keep adjusting to make sure it’s not falling off of your body.

In this picture above it is snapped up all the way. I really love the design of this gown because I can literally unsnap and snap it back up with just one hand. So if I am already holding my baby it’s no problem at all.

It has FULL coverage from top to bottom in the back as well. No more air breezes hitting your bottom! 😄 You won’t have to guess if your backside is peeking through or not, you’ll know it’s not.

When I am wearing these during recovery I am not shy of getting up and going to the restroom when we have visitors. I am also more comfortable with nursing because of the easy access and less fidgeting.

My Labor Gown

Say Hello to Pretty Pushers!!! I found these gowns and fell in love with the design. These labor gowns were made with comfort and easy accessibility in mind. They allow you to be free but still covered up enough where you are comfortable. More skin is showing in these but I personally like that because the less I have on when laboring the better. Women sweat and get extremely hot during labor so this definitely allows you to stay cool. As an added bonus you do feel and look pretty in them! 👌🏽

It is a halter design that has two ties in front of your belly. This will give hospital personnel easier and headache free access to your belly when needing to check or monitor you.

0D02DF10-415A-47AD-A825-E4C3DF14921A.jpeg

The picture below shows the back side. It also has a tie which lays about mid back. It has an opening from there that stops above your bottom so it can be covered up. They left an opening so that an epidural can be easily given without needing to untie or open anything, it’s already accessible. But we don’t need an epidural right? Right!! 😉

I picked this particular color and design for two reasons. I wanted to choose a dark color because I knew I would be wearing this again for the next baby. We all know how hard it is to make stains disappear on light colors. After I washed out all of the soils there were no visible stains. Secondly I could have my coffee all throughout labor! 😅

Some women may feel it is not worth spending the extra money on gowns just to labor and recover in. Some women may be perfectly fine with the traditional hospital gowns. Me...this is my treat! I have given birth Naturally with no medications or interventions whatsoever to 4 babies. Our bodies and minds already go through sooooo much when giving birth. I didn’t want to have to think or worry about more things like “is my bottom showing”, how am I gonna get this gown down to feed my baby” etc. I have found the more comfortable and relaxed I am the smoother my deliveries are...and to me its well worth it!!!

I hope I have enlightened some of you mommy’s today about these gorgeous, accessible, comfortable, cover up and convenient gowns~ 💗

Have you heard about or seen these before? Would you ever consider purchasing one for your own labor experience? Let’s chat!

I had quite traumatic unforgettable births and wore my own pjs and hospital gowns... Nothing I'd read prepared me well enough and I thank technology, doctors, midwives and the NHS for their care @crosheille 🌺 + family/husband support.
I never thought about it, but if you can decide what you wear the softer and easier to move around in it the better 😊

Oh wow @cryptocariad. I am so sorry you had traumatic birth experiences. We can do all of the reading, studying and planning we want but every birth will be different and come with new surprises. Although I prefer midwives over doctors I am really thankful we have them for those that have to take a different route.

Yes being able to labor in the clothing of my choice has really made a difference for me :)

@crosheille I am so excited for you! I love the idea of the birthing gown and recovery gown!❤

And YAY! for natural birth! You go mama!

For my first 2, hospital births (natural!), I had a comfy cotton bath robe and a cotton sleep nursing bra. It worked nicely.

For my 3rd, homebirth, I think I wore a Cake brand nursing bra & some undies with a cloth pad (leaking amniotic fluid) and comfy thin cotton knit jammie pants. Then just a bra for in the birth pool.

For #4, homebirth, I made my "eat local" nursing bra and my super comfy undies to labor in (prelabor mostly). Then it was just the bra while in the birth pool.

The more I had, the less I wanted to wear. It was just me, #hippiehusband and our midwife (plys my mom every so often, and my photographer friend, but they were silent flys on the wall).

For recovery with #1 & 2 i had a tshirt thin cotton knit robe, with a stretch tank under.

For #3 & 4... Undies with a giant cloth post partum pad. We didnt have visitors. I literally just "ran a marathon" (gave birth), lol, so I wanted no visitors unless they just dropped off food 😂 And they did, and we stayed in bed recovering for the first week! 😍 And didnt leave the house (other than Chiropractor appointments) for 3 weeks.
It was glorious and I cant wait to do it again!

I totally think investing in "birth wear" is important! I invested in my bras, post partom cloth pads, robes, and my birth pool!

Wow! I really enjoyed reading your comment! Thank you!! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wanted all of my babies to come out alert, responsive and undrugged. Kudos to you too mama!!! 😃 I love hearing about others Natural birth experiences.

You know it’s funny because I never thought about just wearing a robe, that is such a good alternative!

I have always wanted to do home births but since insurance never covers it we couldn’t afford it out of pocket. This is so beautiful!! I love the picture of you holding your baby as you relax with joy because the labor is over and you get to finally meet that precious little one! The way your husband is holding you and smiling reminds me of what my husband looks like after every birth. He’s so filled with joy that our baby is here but also proud of me for getting them here intervention free and happy that I made it through. So would you say laboring in the pool is easier than not being in there? I experienced it a little bit. Where I give birth there is nice size birthing tub. I only got in it with my firstborn for maybe 30 minutes. The warm water and soothing bubbles slowed down my contractions and gave me a really nice break. After awhile I had to get out so that my labor could progress again. I was actually hoping the baby would “accidentally” come while I was in there lol. The midwives at the hospitals here aren’t allowed to deliver babies in the tub.

I really love being able to choose what I wear and don’t wear. I think birth wear is important too, it really makes a big difference.

So you all are planning for #5?!! 😃🤗

Getting in the pool too early in labor can slow down labor for sure.
With #3 I knew that, so i waited & waited, haha! She was born within 2 minutes of me getting in the pool!
With #4, I got in once active labor was getting pretty intense, close to transition.

We use the Bradley Birthing Method, so I enjoy laboring mostly in my bed. But the warm pool immediately relieves the tired body and gives a lovely weightless feel!

I was able to barter for my midwife/homebirth :)
She was (is retired now) a CNM (certified nurse midwife) thus charged more than the CPM's (certified professional midwife). But even still, paying for a midwife/homebirth is quite a bit cheaper than a hospital bill after insurance.

But, after 2 homebirths, even if insurance covered 100% of hospital birth, Id gladly pay out of pocket for homebirth.

Some midwives are actually able to bill insurance, might be worth looking into if there is a #6 in the future :)

#5 is in the plans. We are hoping to wait until next year, after we sell our house & move to a homestead. But... We tend to oops 😂

Yes it definitely slows it down but it sure is a nice relief. Wow 2 minutes after? That’s pretty darn fast. Oh yes I have read up on the Bradley method. I did a lot of reading even after my doula classes for extra motivation and preparation.

That was awesome that you were able to barter. I am thankful that the way our insurance works, we never have to pay anything out of pocket. With the first two it wasn’t like that but now it works out for us pretty nicely. Our midwives are AMAZING and I always get this huge suite to labor in. They really make it feel like I’m at home because they leave me to myself quite a bit to labor as I wish. My midwives always tell me “since we know you and trust you will do just fine” lol. I guess we have earned special privileges from having so many children with them! This will definitely be our last ;). I’m leaving it all to you!!! LOL!! 😁

Yay that’s so exciting!!! I hope everything works out with the selling and moving!!!

Midwives are the best❤

Yea! I just love reading birth stories! We had 2 in hospital and then three at home. The water definitely feels better, but definitely slows me down - like twiddling my thumbs kind of slow. :) Ha! I birthed one baby in a clawfoot tub at home (a bit small, but it worked) and then 2 birthing tubs. We used Samaritan shared health coverage and they actually cover home births 100%. You have to pay a percentage if you go to the hospital. :)

Wow that’s so awesome that you found insurance that covers it 100%. We don’t have anything like that out here unless I just haven’t come across it yet. It seems they are all scared to cover it because of the liabilities. If we would have found an insurance company that paid for it I’m sure all of my births would have been are home.

You should look into Samaritan Ministries. It is nationwide and we even use it here in Panama. The family pays a certain part and then the other members pay the rest in a shared plan.

I was gonna say we don’t have anything like that here but you said it’s nationwide? I wish I would have known about that before, I sure would have tried. ☹️

It's a Christian ministry. You guys should look into it. We love it...and we don't have to pay insurance that supports abortions, etc.

Wow!! I wish I would have known about this earlier. Unfortunately it’s too late for us now. We don’t have the space or time to plan a homebirth now. I will definitely share this info with others though. Thank you!

Nice! Those look like a good investment! How many more babies will you have in them? ;) Many years ago, before my 2nd was born, I made myself a hospital gown. It even had pearl snaps. I made it out of whichever fabric I had the most of at the time and liked.

1919614_361719485034_5109701_n.jpg

Then I stopped having babies at the hospital. I labored with the other 3 in the water and just wore a sports bra type thing I found at WM. Super comfy and worked.
I also made myself a "hooter hider" and it's one of the things I'll make for other moms who plan to nurse. Here in Panama, I've seen ONE. They don't care anything about covering up in the slightest here!!
1919614_361719530034_398866_n.jpg

I was totally okay with using this if anyone was around. My SIL even borrowed my hospital gown when she had one of her kids. :) Can't wait until your girlie arrives. JUNE 11!!!! (That's the date I'm putting my SBD on.) ;)

Thanks! They really are a good investment. Haaa!!! Oh you’re so funny...there will be no more buns in this oven Lol!! 😂😅

Okay WOW!!! You made both of those??? 😳 You are so skillful!! I love the colors of the hospital gown, it is so pretty. What material was that? It looks shiny! I think I would have just wore a sports bra too if I birthed in a pool.

My mom made my nursing cover for my first baby and I wore it for the second one too. I then had to give it away to someone that really needed it. Now I am about to buy the one that has like a firm ring along the neck area so that I can easily see her while nursing. Lol so they jusy pull out and get to feeding there huh!! I have never been comfortable with just popping them out in public, I have to be covered in some kind of way!

So you say June 11th? We shall see! She might be coming sooner, I just feel it! Thanks for sharing these pics, you are one handy lady!! 😘

Lol - fun times. Yes, the fabric was kind of shiny. It was in my stash, so no telling what kind it was, but it was kind of thick. My nursing cover has a little boning in it to be able to look at the baby. Always nice - I made myself quite a few of them just to have a variety (and used them as blankets as well at times). I hear that these Milk Snob covers are nice and multi functional as well. The lady who makes them is from my home town (Allen, TX). Yes, it's crazy to watch women just sitting in church, on the side of the road, at a party...nursing without a cover. We have this one friend........... Lol. June 11 isn't that far off!!! You can wait...and then name her Kama after her date twin. ;)

Lol yes that’s what it’s called...boning! 👌🏽

I just ordered a Baby K’tan that is similar to the Milk Sobs which are nice by the way. I didn’t get it for nursing though, mainly for wearing the baby. I have never wore my babies before but now with having an almost terrible two running around on top of homeschooling I just have to have my hands free. I hear they really help put the baby to sleep and keep them comfortable up next to you.

Oh okay I see why we’re shooting for June 11th now!!! 😄😉 Lol @ you can wait!!! 😂😂😂💕

Yes, baby wearing is great!! I hope that you like it. I think it will definitely help with homeschooling and chasing a few kids around at the same time. :)

Haaa!! Yes I hope so too!! I definitely need my hands free at all times lol!

"hooter hider" OMG dying 😂 That's by far the funniest thing I read today!!

It's a real thing my friend... hooter hider :)

Good luck with the laboring! The gows look very fashionable ;-). About sndbox, I will nominate you end of May because the form isn't available right now. The upvote won't be that big as before but you don't have to pay as much as before (I think!)

Thank you so much!! I hope it’s smooth and fast!

Okay cool! So it looks like they are getting their delegation back but not as much as before? I don’t mind, I’ll just be happy to be accepted! 😉 Thanks for the update, I really appreciate it~ 💕

No, unfortunetely they dont get the delegation back. They have to do it with what they have and it isnt as much as before. I hope they will accept you because it is at the end their decision ☺

Oh wow, okay. Yes I really hope they accept me too :)

Thanks again~ 💕

Lol modesty.

That’s the first thing that went.

Cute gown ❤️❤️

LOL yes it was!! 😂

Thanks! 😊💕

Oh wow 5th baby, congratulations! Way to go mama.

I didn't like the hospital gowns either so on my next pregnancies I wore my husband's shirt which went all the way above my knees so I'm pretty covered.

I understand being hot and cold and sweaty all throughout the labor and the light shirt helped a lot.

Hahaha I understand the modesty part flying out the window too! Oh my that was hilarious, I can totally relate.

Congrats again and I hope you have a quick labor and quick recovery. With my 4th, it was painful nursing but we're mamas we're troopers.

Thank you so much!! Sometimes it still shocks me that we’re about to have 5 kiddos around here lol!

Oh yes wearing an oversized t-shirt is a great idea too!

Haaa! Didn’t it though? That’s the last thing on our minds during labor!! 😅😂🤣

Thank you so much! I sure hope it’s quick and smooth too. It was painful for me nursing all of my boys...my daughter was the easiest. I’m hoping she will be easy on me like her sister was. 🤞🏽 You’re right, we are troopers! 😃

I appreciate your wonderful comment~ 💖

I have never heard of these before. You mean there is a company creating these gowns on purpose? Wow I love how convenient it is to breastfeed. I have to say this is genius, @crosheille! How many did you equip yourself with? :)

I wore the hospital robe. Had all the time to put it on and waited because my labour was induced due to my son growing a bit big and my gynae wanted to go for his vacation. I depended on the laughing gas and then it happened within two hours I guess. After that it has always been breastfeeding friendly clothes for almost 3 years till we weaned recently. Not sure if my hospitals would allow us to have our own fancy robes. If not, it can actually feel so special to have a labour robe!! :) your birth photos are beautiful!!

Oh yes! This is a thing now! So many mamas are choosing to provide their own picked out gowns for labor and delivery. They are so comfortable and convenient, I recommend them to every expecting Mama! I currently have 1 laboring gown and 2 recovering gowns.

I am the same way. I purchase nursing friendly clothing so that it won’t be too much of a hassle to feed my babies. When you’re ready for baby #2 I hope you are able to wear one of these! 😃

Wow, number 5! Congrats and good luck with the birth. We recently got matched with our son through adoption as I unfortunately can't carry my own. Im excited and nervous to meet him even without the labour part. 😁

Yes #5!! 😬😄 Thank you so much! Congratulations to you all as well!! That is very exciting! 😃🎉

My labor story is a bit of a doozy, but dispensing with the details, I was far happier and more comfortable buck naked at home in front of my husband, mother, and 4 midwives, than I was nicely semi-covered up in the hospital. Like you said, modesty flew out the window. Post-labor at home, I just went to bed naked except for panties...talk about easy breastfeeding! LOL

If I had to do it again and knew I'd end up at the hospital, I'd have gotten one of those gownies for sure.

😂😂😂 oh my goodness, you had me at buck naked!!! I know that’s right!! Oh how I would have loved to birth all of my children at home. I wish insurance covered something like that but we sure couldn’t afford it out of pocket. LOL yes...modesty who? It’s long gone during labor. Haaa yes being naked is definitely easy access to nursing!!

I really love them. Being comfortable helps me get through it better :)
