Lake Stiucilor

At 10 km from Gherla, the town where I live is perhaps the most beautiful lake in the county of Cluj. Known as Lake Stiucii or Lacul Stiucilor, Lake Sacalaia is located on the Bontului Valley, a tributary of Fizesului, between the villages of Fizesu Gherlii and Sic.

It is a fresh and clear natural lake of water, being fed by a few waterfalls and numerous springs that provide a relatively constant volume of water. Water Luck has an area of 26 ha, and its depth reaches approx. 10 m, being the deepest lake in the country. The surrounding stufaris (especially upstream) occupies about 120 ha. Thus, the lake, together with the surrounding stufaris and the grove developed in the affluent valleys, is a complex of ecosystems characteristic of wetlands.

Lake Sacalaia is considered a natural monument for many reasons. Besides its size and depth, it is also the only lake in Romania on which the plaur (floating reed formations) develops, as in the Danube Delta. It is the only natural lake in Transylvania that has suffered a minimal negative human influence, largely due to the fact that it is a natural reserve since 1966. It is allowed to fish, the lake being recognized especially due to the population of pike, where it is dragged name.
Besides the pike, the lake offers a wide range of fish, of which the most important species are: salmon, carass, carp, lemon, beetle. Sometimes, the size of the fish is even "monstrous": over 3 m in height and over 7 m in sleep. Fishing is allowed only in the boat and is prohibited during the exit of the fish to the surface.
