8 Awesome Podcasts You Should Check Out

in #life8 years ago

I quite literally embody my username. I am a true junkie of content. Podcasts happen to be one of my favourite forms of content to consume because it's just so damn portable and now extremely accessible. Gone are the days of having to actually visit a website and download an MP3 and then copy it to your iPod. If you have a recent smartphone, you have the ability to start listening to podcasts right now out of the box.

Many of these podcasts are already very well known but maybe some don't know about them, I thought I would share my favourites and what I like about them. I'd also be interested in hearing from others in the comments on podcasts they enjoy and why.

The Joe Rogan Experience

This has to be my all time favourite podcast. If you aren't already familiar with Joe Rogan here is the quick summary.

Joe was a kickboxer turned stand-up comedian from Boston who rose to fame with a role on the 90's sitcom NewsRadio. Joe parlayed that fame into even more by landing hosting jobs on the hit game show Fear Factor and is still to this day a longtime ringside commentator for the UFC. Joe found marijuana and psychedelics relatively late in his after being adamantly drug free during his youth. Drug culture and the use mind expanding substances play a heavy role in Joe's podcasts.

You never know what subject matter will be discussed and what kind of guest Joe will have on his shows. Joe welcomes all sorts of guests to his show ranging from MMA fighters, stand up comedians to historians and scientists. No matter what they are talking about one thing is for sure, you are going to hear a very candid and real conversation that will cut through all the talking-point bullshit we are used to seeing in mainstream media. Joe is an inquisitive mind and he's just going to lay it all on the table and ask the real questions. The great thing about Joe is that he is extremely humble and will always make sure to stress he doesn't know the answer rather than just make it up or assert something as fact.

These shows typically run between 2 and 3 hours in length but you would never know it since it flies by so fast. If you only listen to one podcast from my list it should be this one.

The David Pakman Show

David Pakman has branded himself as an independent left-wing progressive talk show that aims to cover issues the mainstream media is missing. What I like about David Pakman is that he is always very objective and on point with his statistics and facts. David is often being criticized from both left and right wing extremes which tells me he's doing a good job finding that nuanced middle ground where the truth usually lies.

A major selling point for his show is that it is member supported and so doesn't suffer from corporate censorship. A particularly funny segment that is regularly done on Wednesdays is called "Hatriot Mail" where David has a professional voice actor read out the most vile and cruel hate mail he receives, misspellings and grammatical errors coming from a professional voice is oddly satisfying and always good for a chuckle.

If you only listen to one episode of this show try and make it a Wednesday episode.

The Adam Carolla Show

Adam Carolla is probably best known as co-host to Jimmy Kimmel for the Man Show but Adam also has a long career doing radio and an MTV talk show with Dr. Drew called Love Line. After being fired from his gig in morning radio Adam transferred the very familiar format to pod casting.

Adam's show has a lot of production quality in it and is very much like any morning radio show you could hear around the country with side kicks and sound drops constantly chiming in. This being a podcast though it's all completely uncensored. I'm going to be real here Adam repeats himself a lot and after you've listened to his show for awhile you will notice that he tells the same stories over and over again and get's pretty full of himself.

This is a daily show that I've been listening a little less than before but still has some solid current events comedy and A list guests. Adam holds the Guinness book of world records for the most downloaded podcast. The fact that he grows his download numbers by releasing fresh daily content makes him a hard target for anyone seeking to dethrone him.

Reasonable Doubt

Following up on the Adam Carolla show, Adam has many podcasts but his spin-off podcast I enjoy the most is on he does with celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos. The odd pair met each other due to living in the same posh LA neighborhood. Mark is a contributor for various cable news channels and is no stranger to speaking about legal issues in the media.

This is a weekly podcast that I enjoy because it offers a very candid look into the behind the scenes of some very high profile cases. Mark has even gotten in a little trouble in the past for divulging a little too much about a case he was working on. If you are interested in current events in celebrity legal cases this one is highly entertaining.

Hollywood Babble-On

Hollywood movie writer/director Kevin Smith partners up with entertainment reporter and voice actor Ralph Garmin for a weekly lampooning of Hollywood news. This show is generally recorded in front of a live audience at the Hollywood improv theatre. The show heavily involves fan interaction and a large chunk of each show involves reading various fan emails of people that traveled a large distance to watch the podcast being recorded.

Half the fun of Hollywood Babble-On is all the various impersonations co-host Ralph Garmin will perform often mixing and matching bits on the fly as requested by the audience and the flow of the show. I'm such a fan of this podcast I've even attended one of them.

Moment of Clarity / Redacted Tonight

New York stand up comedian Lee Camp has two podcasts in one every week for those looking for a recap of the week's political news from a progressive view point. I'm not quite sure of exactly how it works but Moment of Clarity is the opening part of the show that is recorded in a New York City comedy club green room. Often this portion will be a monologue but sometimes there are guests that join Lee.

What I'm really unsure of is if this part of the podcast is recorded before or after Redacted Tonight which comes as the second portion of the podcast and is kind of like a raw uncensored version of The Daily Show but recorded in a comedy club. Lee is always good

Alex Jones' Infowars

Let's start with this is a news show reporting things from a conspiracy theory angle. If I had to sum up the show's theme it would be: The corporate elites are out to create their one world government and they will crush anyone that get's in their way, Alex is here to expose and stop them.

So I'm not really sure what to say about Alex Jones. Some see him as a genius some see him as a mad man. I like the hypothesis that Alex Jones is actually a misinformation agent for the CIA simple because it sounds like something he would say about someone else on his show. No matter how you view Alex Jones his show is entertaining.

Sometimes I listen and I think this man and his guest are bat shit crazy, other times I've listened and thought my god this man is the messiah. I'm not going to go into the validity of Alex's news but recommend you give it a listen from time to time if for nothing more than to just hear what kind of conspiracy theories are being floated around these days.
