A new documentary series hosted by Will Smith is catching the world by storm. The series, One Strange Rock, is the story of the world told through the unique viewing lens’ of 8 astronauts who spent more than 1,000 combined days in space. Being on Earth, we are so confined to knowing just what we encounter on the surface-level. What we take for granted is everything going on around us that keeps life, our atmosphere, and the environment in a well balanced equilibrium. Not that we just take these things for granted, either. Most of us don’t even know how the true origins, the most unique origins of life, came into existence. Everything that created our planet could have been all for nothing if the asteroid that began this violently calming storm stuck the ocean rather than a large sulphur reserve.
The documentary is extremely fascinating, and ties the interconnectedness of everything around us that seems like a paradoxical illusion. A violent cosmic storm created the most uniquely beautiful place in the universe, at least that we are aware of. Earth is currently the only terrestrial place in the universe with an oxygen rich environment, and without this essential gas, life would certainly be much different than we know it. Despite the relative implications of our burgeoning planet such as human population growth, temporal relationships required for biotic organisms to keep breathing, and the interrelatedness of opposing poles, our atmospheric O2 concentration has remained surprisingly constant.
We are walking a fine line between life and death. Too little oxygen and we will choke, too much oxygen and we will burn. This phenomenon goes far deeper than space allows us to venture. Everything is constantly changing, revolving, and reacting, forcing Earth to adapt accordingly to keep everything suitably balanced for life to flourish.
